Lake Cygnus in June

Hi All

A trip up to Lake Cygnus last weekend. Our first SW Tassie trip. The forecast was very good and proved to be spot on.

First night was at Junction Creek and then next day made it up to Cygnus. The mud on the plains as not too bad and creek levels were all low. The climb up Moraine A was a bit harder than perhaps we had thought it might be but no real issues just a few breaks needed. Across the top to the lake was really nice in the winter sun. Made camp at Cygnus about 3:30pm. A very cold night with heavy frost followed.

The next morning we started early and carefully picked our way back to the top of Moraine A, the ice and frost was a bit tricky but we moved along ok. The view of the fog flowing down from Lake Pedder through the valley over the Port Davey track was really something. It looked like a white liquid pouring down between the mountains.

We descended and walked through thick fog all the way back to the car at Scott's Peak. got back about 3:30pm which we were happy about as we were fearful of doing the last bit in the dark. We certainly learnt some lessons about condensation in small tents in winter. Had we walked for a few more days then wet sleeping bags may have been an issue.... a lesson learnt.

Did you find condensation an issue with the Allak? - did you have the vents open?
Just wondering as I have not had an issue to date but have not used the tent in damp conditions

The hilleberg tent pictured is a Solo, the other a microlight
We both had significant condensation issues to deal with. To give you an idea of the kind of moisture that was about, although it didn't rain over night at junction creek, when we got up the trees around us were dripping onto us. It was a really thick, wet fog that coated your clothes a bit as you walked through it.
I don't think there is a tent out there that would have been dripping after a night at the spots we stopped.

Might have made you wet, but the fog certainly makes for a spectacle! Lovely photos of what looks like a great trip

It was definitely wet and it was definitely cold but it was kinda spectacular.

That was about 8am so still very early. Mount Anne is just under the sun, looks so small in the pics but really dominates the sky line with when you see it with your eyes.

Yes, it was a very early start - i think we almost got out of the crater of Lake Cygnus before the sun was up.

Glorious morning though ... couldn't have asked for clearer, calmer (or crisper) weather.

I really like the two shots of fortuna. On the second one (moonset over fortuna) the log in the foreground kinda looks like a giant's outstretched hand. Could be just me. Cygnus is a great spot and a really good option if time is limited.

I look at those lovely shots, reflect on the ice and tents and realise why I'm so happy in my motorhome!
