Milligans and Pitt

Yesterday I decided to go for a stroll in the alpine region behind Mt King William 1. My aim was to wander up Milligans Peak, and Mount Pitt. This is a lovely area which is accessible via KW1, there is no track past KW1 and real care must be taken when walking due to the profusion of cushion plants and other sensitive growth. The vistas are fantastic both in the foreground and in the distance. At various points there are views of the southern part of the Cradle Mtn/Lake St Clair region, the Cheyne range, the area around Mt Roland Cross and right down the King William range. A solid day walk of 7-8 hours will let you explore much of this little gem of an area. I had originally intended to camp somewhere out near Wessex tarn or up on the ridge of Mount Pitt but the ground everywhere was absolutely sodden even on the summits. That and the fact that about 15 minutes after reaching the top of Pitt the wind changed, ramped up to about 35kph plus added heavy rain and sleet combined to change my mind. The walk back to KW1 was vicious to say the least. Overall this area scores 4/5 for me.
