An interesting report thankyou! Sounds like quite the challenging walk.

I would be interested in seeing gear lists from people especially the 18kg pack vs the 27kg one.

Cheers.

Really there wasnt much difference besides the food. I had the 18kg pack, my tent is 600grams lighter than the 27kg pack carrier, my sleeping bag around 300-400g, my pack over one kg lighter... I only had 2 gas cannisters while he had 3, and I believe he carried out alot more food than me, and had alot more "luxury" food. Before I hurt my back weight really wasnt an issue, but an 18month injury forced me to think light.

Gear list..... hmmmmmm roughly.

For the first time ever i've used my pack liner too.....

Tent/groundsheet and tarp.
Neoair and cushion.
Sleeping bag (lightweight) and thermal reactor liner.
Pack cover
Food..................

GPS, camera, Headtorch, mp3 player and spare batteries for all.
2 long sleeve thermals, 2 short sleeve. 2 walking tops. 1 jumper 1 down vest. 2 thermals pants, 2 pairs of longpants with zip off legs. 1 beannie, 1 balaclava, 2 undies, 3 socks (yes 3 pairs) one thermal gloves, one scrub gloves..... sunhut. Overpants and goretex jacket. Crocs. water bottle water bladder 4l.

loo paper and trowel first aid kit, repair kit.......

Jetboil, 2 cannisters.....
1 cup
Towel
Spoon and knife.

food roughly 11 mains. 10 breakfasts. lunch of dry biscuits and peanut butter. 32 assorted "bars" 4 toffee apple yummies!!!!! 400g peantus, 350gram smarties. 8 soups 8 drinking chocolates, 11 coffees and 11 sugars. 8 teabags. Going to include 2 blocks of chocolate which will add 500grams..... And a bag of sandwiches for day 1 (boat and river day) 2 bags of gatorade, 2 bags of powdered milk.
Nothing to see here.

My gear set was essential the same... but I had around the 22kg mark..

I can only account for the weight difference in terms of:
1. tent - I carried a 2kg / 2 man tent.
2. pack - I had a larger pack and the light weight junkies tell me it weights at least at 1kg more.
3. food - food wise I had roughly the same. But my evening meals may have been heavier, I didn't really have any luxuries.
4. extra equipment - SPOT, First Aid Kit + Gastro, antibotics, anti-inflammatories and other medication (extra items for remote walking..)
5. Alcohol - 600ml
6. 3 rolls of vacuum packed toilet paper - because when you get the slops in the middle of nowhere you need it.

I had two gas bottles but only used a single cylinder. Jetboils are pretty efficient for rehydrating meals.

Cheers

23kg. Essentially the same gear. The only thing of note is my pack which is 16 years old, was easily the lightest and came off with a couple of small tears were there is a double layer of canvas so easy enough to repair. Other very new packs had holes!!! Don't make things like they used to :)
