Lady Lake 23 & 24 August with the Strollers

Well, I finally managed to join some of the BWT strollers (those who didn't have the dreaded lurgy) on one of their walks. sthughes, flyfisher and I met on the road near the start of the walk yesterday morning, and taswaterfalls and Mrs Taswaterfalls came up later that night (in the dark!!!).

There wasn't a lot of snow around near the hut but we went for a walk to the unnamed peak just north of Nell's Bluff, where the patches of snow were a little larger and a little deeper. Here's some wombat tracks (I think) near the peak.

My sleeping bag, of about 20 years ripped open while I was trying get the fabric unstuck from the zip as I was going to bed. Feathers went everywhere during the night. One up my nose early in the morning and all over my clothes when I got up. A cloud of feathers seemed to follow me everywhere for a while.

Wow, I was expecting to see lots more snow than that up there. The Tiers looked thoroughly coated last weekend (when I wasn't sick ). Anyway, nice to see you all had a good couple of days up there. It's a really great, new hut, I'm surprised there's not more people up there more often.

heheh... they're my camp slippers. I take decent shoes as camp slippers so that they could double up as walking shoes IF my boots fell apart. I can't afford to buy an extra pair of shoes just for this purpose when I've already got perfectly good sneakers.

Looks like there was a nice bit of snow still up there, looks like a very nice area, bugger about the bag! good excuse to get a new one though

I think it would be a good one for young kids, in that it is short (1.5 to 2 hours - probably longer with kids). But it is a constant moderately steep climb for the entire way, which is rather taxing. I'm considering getting my kids up there this summer, but ours are very young, and we'd have to carry them all the way (then maybe go back to the car for the rest of the gear).

PS. I've no idea what my pack weighed, and don't really care. It certainly wasn't ultra light, despite the short walk, as I enjoyed fresh scotch fillet and veges for dinner, and bacon and eggs for breakfast.

Oh, nothing is sweeter than something really indulgent for dinner, when you've carried it on your back for ages.

I have to say that Niks Bacon and eggs did smell mighty tempting for breakfast...but the boring-bag of apricot crumble was surprisingly good and made sweet breakie

We arrived at hut in dark...after short rest I couldnt resist the still, clear night so I popped out to take a long exposure of the ridge behind the hut (a bottle of Pooley 2006 Pinot and a bottle of Great Western Tiers Strawberry wine may have resulted in the bump of tripod which made the little tails on the trails...oh well) :



Mrs Waterfalls acompanied me for her first overnight walk...which although she felt the cold I have been assured she will repeat asap (a very snow covered Mt Ironstone in background of this shot)



Even though she needed to steal my puffer, uggies, socks, and beanie because she was cold....she still managed to play in snow

I think you guys may need to widen your browser windows to see the photo. He's all there in the actual photo. Unfortunately, the phpBB style I'm using here will trim photos to fit the window width, rather than use a scrollbar.

Ah, right you are sir! Some of us poor plebs are stuck with monitors that don't go much above 1024x768. I temporarily upped the res to the squinty setting and lo and behold, there was the rest of STH!

Not getting soppy here or too deep but it brings an excellent new dimension to your relationship if you can go bushwalking together.

Took my wife on the OT 5 yrs ago and while she struggled at the end of a badly planned day from Kia Ora Hut to Pine Valley in pouring rain and sleet (well if you call hitting the wall, crying, yelling and calling me every name under the sun a "struggle") she survived and was really keen to get back into it and try hiking again.
We re did the OT again 3 months later and had a ball. Have done many other walks together since then and find it adds a great new dimension to your relationship. It gives you something to look forward to doing together (or with a group) and is great fun planning and organising the next expedition.

She did the OT solo earlier this year and I was (am) very proud of her - (she blogged about it here: http://frankinoz.blogspot.com/2008/04/o ... -trip.html )

We will be back in Tassie in December to walk from the Walls to Cradle and then in Feb to either do the South Coast Track (again) or some other multidayer

So taswaterfalls.com, encourage it slowly and you two should have fun together for years!

I've finally had the gaping tear in my sleeping bag repaired (courtesy of my wonderful wife). All set for this weekend up at Cradle!
