Black Bluff... almost.

Tue 11 Sep, 2012 10:13 pm

Hey all, first post in a while! Getting to the business end of the uni year. However, didn't stop us from getting out this past weekend, and dragging along a new forumite also!

Plan was to head up to Black Bluff the past Sunday, with hopefully calmer weather than the couple of days before. Definitely glad we didn't try going up on Saturday and overnighting at Paddy's Lake, as had been the plan before sickness changed things, looks like we would have been blown off! Plenty of fallen branches/debris on the track.

The walk was a pleasant ascent through rainforest at first, before drying out and thinning out somewhat, allowing lovely views through the haze back towards the Dial Range. Unfortunately, we only made it as far as Paddy's Lake, but given our physical condition at the time, were satisfied to have even made it that far!

Will definitely be looking forward to making it all the way to the top next time, as I dare say the views could be pretty special at times!

A few photos to round up the report:

A long awaited lunch at Paddy's Lake

We may not have climbed Black Bluff, but we couldn't very well head back down without at least climbing something, so we decided to head up the small summit immediately to the east of the lake

Lovely views across to Mt Roland from the top

And a nice view back towards the coast on the way down

All in all, a lovely day out with some good company. Thanks for coming along Kent, hopefully the knees have recovered somewhat!

Thanks for reading :)

G'day Biggbird! Great walk :)

Amen to that!

After looking at Black Bluff for the past few years from our driveway, I finally got up there earlier this year, in great weather. yep, pretty nice views :D
It was warm enough to have a dip in the lake, but was not quite as enjoyable as it could have been if I hadn't seen a tiger snake swimming in it on our way up...

Now i'm hanging out to do the bit of the Penguin-Cradle trail from there to the Link Rd near Cradle (or probably vice versa), when the days are a bit longer, and the weather a bit kinder. Not fun in wild weather, as some friends attest!

Haha definitely keen to do the full PCT now also, and might even see if the old man will be up for it sometime in the near future, he's certainly been talking about it for long enough!

Brave to have a swim... Would have to be pretty warm!

It was lovely and refreshing!

Re the PCT - I've decided i don't want to do it in one go, but would love to do it all by day walks or overnighters. Some bits of the track are
very narrow (one boot wide), very slippery, and traversing steep slopes into the river  I'd rather do those bits with a day pack. But if you're very sure-footed, it should be a very satisfying walk :)

Yeah, I've seen posts about those particular sections... Seems like they might be ok in nice weather, but how often does that happen down here?!
