Finding a weather and work window, my mate Tim and I recently decided on a three day trip to Mt Olympus. We planned to catch the ferry to Echo Point, walk a little way up the Overland Track, then plunge into the steep forest that would take us 500 metres higher to a campsite beside Lake Oenone. From there we planned to scramble up Olympus. As there's no track from Echo Point, we gathered three or four different sets of “notes” about how to get there. None of them was exactly precise; nor did any of them agree. “How hard can it be?” and “What could possibly go wrong?” became our catch cries.

In the end, we made our own mistakes, but we got there. More importantly we got back too :)

I've posted a fuller account, and more piccies, on my (gasp) blog. If you're interested, read here http://www.naturescribe.com/2013/02/the-abode-of-gods.html, and then hit "Newer Posts".

cheers

Peter

Congratulations! I was planning on climbing Olympus on the 1st of March but in the end barely got to see the damn mountain. Ended up climbing Little Hugel the next day and getting some amazing views of the Cuvier Valley and Olympus, but no time for an ascent.Next time.

Is now the time to say it's probably easier to go from Byron Gap? :)

Possibly not Dan, possibly not! :(

Anyway, Cliche 101 "No pain, no gain" etc etc. A few weeks later and it looks a little like the PoWs do to you, except for fewer pix and a lot less pain :D

cheers

It's a lot easier from Byron Gap. Even if you're stupid enough to go via Lamont's and do the whole ridgeline.
But the descent from Oenone is the real killer. Especially in the ^$%IO) rain.
