Death at Mount Anne 1974

On February 5th, 1974, Rosemary Young fell to her death near Mount Lot whilst hiking the Mount Anne circuit. We're working on a 50 year commemorative hike and subsequent documentary with Rosemary's younger brother, for next year. I'm trying to find some info on the accident but not having much luck. Does anyone on here remember it? Or perhaps know someone who might. I assume there would be police reports and various other archival info available but have no idea where to look.

I found nothing on NLA Trove Tasmanian newspapers ... searched from Feb 74 to June 74.

Hi Relaxtec,

I asked around and someone suggested this:

https://libraries.tas.gov.au/get-help/h ... formation/

Also, someone met her a few days before her death. Not sure of the exact date, but when they came out from their walk,
"the front page of the paper (probably the Mercury) covered the story of her fall."

It's probably worth contacting Hobart Walking Club, if you haven't already.

I went through uni with her sister.
She was one of 2 girls traversing Mt Lot on a grassed slope.
The girl in front heard nothing at all, but turned back to find her gone.
I believe they went in via the lake to retrieve her body.

The Hobart Walking Club mag had her at number 32 on their list and may be able to provide more info?

Thanks for the replies.
Tortoise; Do you know this person that met Rosemary a few days earlier?
I would be keen to have a quick chat to them.

The Mercury newspaper archives can be viewed on micro film at UTAS Morris Miller Library - http://encore.lib.utas.edu.au/iii/encor ... 1?lang=eng

Trove, as yet, does not cover that time range...

I was interested in this very sad story, so I pulled a few article from the Mercury.

It's on microfilm box 422 Jan-Feb 1974 (Tas State Library - Hobart)

The first report is Thursday Feb 7 1974, front page.

I'll post the reports here for the 7th, 8th and 9th. There may be additional reporting/letters but I didn't look too deep into it. There is reference to a coronial inquest in the article on the 8th. I assume the outcome was reported sometime later.

And continues onto page 2.
