Bushwalk Australia

Hi
could members please recommend some walks in the huon /south of huon area. I am just getting back into bushwalking so am looing for walks of 3 to 5 hourish duration, clear tracks (so I don't get lost ) and preferably circular.
Is there anything like that around here?

Hartz Peak comes to mind. This probably fits your 3 - 5 hour duration with an opportunity to extend with side trips to the lakes. Quite a good track with board walk in some sections. The climb up the peak is a good introduction to climbing on dolerite scree and is quite safe and easy. Great views to Federation Peak from the top, and from the ridge if you choose not to go all the way. If you're new to walking, pick a day with good weather if possible as it can be exposed in that area.

Another possibility is Cockle Creek to South Cape Bay. Probably more like 5 -7 hours, but flat and a well marked easy to follow track. Fantastic beach too. Surfers carry boards down there.

Up around Mt Wellington might be a better place to find some shorter circuit walks.

There's a book you can get, Family Walks of Huon Valley, that would have heaps of ideas.

oh they sound like great ideas wello, I've headed up to Mt hartz for the snow a few times, can't believe I didn't think about it for a walk, duh! I'll work up to the south cape day walk, defidently want to do that whole track one day. Was reading the Wild 122 and it had a good article about the track but also mentioned something about lots of thick sticky black mud on that section, might have to invest in some gaiters soonish.

lake skinner is also good, with the possibility of extending the walk up to snowy south

I picked up a couple of 2nd hand earlier editions in Hobart over the Xmas break and found them quite useful. They generally include lists like circuits, easier walks and so on.

Thanks guys this has been helpful, I think I will check out lake Skinner this weekend and then look at mt hartz next. Along with the book recommendations I also came across a nice website describing a few walks in the area so between all that I think that will set me up nicely for the foreseeable future .
