G’Day All,

Thought I’d post a trip report here for a recent stroll up Fansipan in Vietnam. Fansipan is the highest point in Indochina at 3143m. Walk was carried out on a 5 day stopover on my annual trip back to the motherland to see relatives. Itinerary is as follows:

Monday - Land Hanoi – Look around City
Monday - Night Train to Sappa
Tuesday - Day and Night in Sappa
Wednesday - Start walk from 1900m up to camp at 2800m
Thursday – Reach Summit and return to Sappa
Thursday – Night Train to Hanoi
Friday – Day and Night in Hanoi
Saturday – Fly to Australia

The walk was fantastic on a really good track. It would have been possible to reach the peak on the first day and then return to the camp as we reached the camp at 2.30pm after only 4 hrs. Decided however to leave it until the following morning due to cloud cover which by all accounts is very common. The track was steep in places and scrambling over steep rocks would have been extremely hazardous in the wet. We were blessed with good weather for the whole trip with temp around low 20’s and no rain. I also opted not too carry my own bag. It was my first time in Vietnam and the people, food and scenery were ace.

Nice one, Pomysi! Highest peak in southeast asia! I have just returned from doing the 2nd highest. Im sure you had fun! =)

Hi Julafreak - you are about 950m too low. Mt Kinabalu in the Malaysian state of Sabah (on Borneo) is the highest peak in SE Asia at 4095m (they used to claim 4101m).

Great to see the pictures and your first trip report. Sounds like a great place for an off state Strollers' walk. Now I will take two porters given what I carry, um? do they have elephants Welcome back to the land down under.

Thanks for the photos. I recently came back from climbing Fansipan. It was a misty day, hence I couldn't see much. But your photos help me to re-live my walk.
