You would think it would be illegal for a ranger to take a knife off you.
If the rules say no carving love hearts in the trees etc, then don't do it. But there is no reason for them to take a knife off you. Even if you only have a foreseen use for one, and no immediate or planned use for one, when walking in a National Park. You could have it as a 'survival'/emergency/first aid tool, or as something to make your day feel more 'authentic'.
There is no way they can legally take a knife off you. That is what the police are for. And, if you were bushwalking, and the knife wasn't a Samurai Sword, or you weren't walking around with it in your hand Rambo style on the trails, or waving it menacingly at people, or otherwise committing affray,then they wouldn't care and would have no legal recourse to take the knife off you.
