Royal National Park

Hello,
I was wondering, does anybody know if it is ok to bring a Machete or survival knife into the Royal National Park?
I'm not planning on cutting down any trees. I just wanted to bring one in to do some fun stuff with any wood lying around such as make a walking stick etc.

I had a tomahawk confiscated in the mid 70s.
Call the visitors centre on 02 9542 0648.
They should know.

Not wise. It'll scare a lot of visitors. But if you hide it in the pack and use it at a highly secluded location...

A friend of mine had a machete confiscated in the 70's at Marley. The ranger who took it said come back next week and collect it from the rangers' office, but he didn't bother.

Like what? Somewhere where you can cut and cut? One of the state forests or a private property by negotiation? Be careful or you may get mistaken as Ivan Milat.

You need to have a reasonable excuse to carry a knife in public. Not sure if making a walking stick would 'cut it'

Unless you're in Victoria. Where you're not allowed to carry a knife at all. For any reason.

You would think it would be illegal for a ranger to take a knife off you.
If the rules say no carving love hearts in the trees etc, then don't do it. But there is no reason for them to take a knife off you. Even if you only have a foreseen use for one, and no immediate or planned use for one, when walking in a National Park. You could have it as a 'survival'/emergency/first aid tool, or as something to make your day feel more 'authentic'.
There is no way they can legally take a knife off you. That is what the police are for. And, if you were bushwalking, and the knife wasn't a Samurai Sword, or you weren't walking around with it in your hand Rambo style on the trails, or waving it menacingly at people, or otherwise committing affray,then they wouldn't care and would have no legal recourse to take the knife off you.
