My wife and I spent two days hiking the Main Range and Summit Trail circuit.

There's always skiers - except when there's a tempest - and them it's a completely different kind of fun (type 2).

IMHO, the Thredbo-Kosci-Charlotte-Perisher route has the most day tripping skiers. Townsend had less when I was there. I'm told Jagungal has very few.

IMHO, the Thredbo-Kosci-Charlotte-Perisher route has the most day tripping skiers. Townsend had less when I was there. I'm told Jagungal has very few.

As a general rule, numbers drop on the inverse square of the distance from the road head and the inverse cube of the climb. I have no idea how the two combine, or how to factor in scrub. Anything within about three hours of the road head (or top of the lifts in winter) will have higher numbers. A few years ago I saw only a handful of people going from Round Mountain to Mt Tate, but after Twynum there were more people and once I reached the circuit walking track there were hordes. Kosciuszko summit and approaches had hundreds of people. I camped next to an unlisted rock. For most people Jagungal is not a day trip from the road head in any season .

It changes every year of course but November can be a pretty good time with some snow still about but not many skiers.

Hi Grant,

Looked at your blog and trip, great.
It is a truly beautiful area and could spend days there.
Seems you follow a similar tradition with the boot view, I do the same.
Was up there for around New Years over a couple of days.

Read your blog. Nice report.
By the way, you can do the same circuit walk and also climb Mt Twynam, Mt Townsend & Mt Kosciuszko (3 highest peaks of Australia) in one go.
