Esgate Pass.

After much reading and studying of track notes I've had my mind set on doing Esgate Pass for a while now, but I have very limited climbing and scrambling experience - getting to the top of the Ruined Castle, and some rock climbing at Mt Piddington a year or two ago would be about it. I made it down Blacks Ladder pretty effortlessly, but turned back at the waterfall (as per Allan Wells' notes). Would Esgate Pass be alright to attempt for a youngin such as myself, or is more climbing experience needed?
On a similar note, Radiata Plateau fascinates me, especially all the metal ruins and equipment (even if it is rubbish, and inconsiderate). Anyone know the story behind these?
