Isla Gorge

We were driving past on the way to a sea kayak trip in Queensland and stopped for a day of walking. The park is small but scenic, only one official track but the bush is not thick so walking without a track is pretty easy. Seems like, judging by the footpads radiating out from the camping area, that many people do some off-track exploring.

The topo map isn't that much help because of the scale, but it does give some idea where to go.

From the camping area, we took the ridge to the NE, good footpad in lots of places and scrambled up three 400 m bumps that lay out on a north ridge. Easy walking up and down to saddles and although there are lots of short sandstone cliffs you can find many places to scramble up. Scramble up one side, walk along the top, drop off the other and keep going. There are arches and caves everywhere.

We also walked down to the main creek - dry - from the end of the lookout track. This has a good foot pad and cairns that are not needed as you simply follow the ridge down. Then we followed the creek up until we could scramble up to a narrower ridge and walk back along the ridge to the highway and back to camp. Also a very nice circuit. We saw only one small pool of skanky water so I think you would have to carry water to camp.
