Mt Olympus - lake Petrarch

Sun 30 Mar, 2014 2:35 pm

In 10 days I will be heading to Lake st Clair then going up to echo Point then moving to Lake Petrarch. I am wondering if climbing Mt Olympus from that position is doable and where should I attack it from ? Simjc

You mean from Echo Pt. over Olympus to Petrach? Yes, iv'e not done so but it's been mentioned on here before.
You may find a better route in traversing to Byron Gap once on top though, not difficult, i'd imagine more rewarding?
(and avoiding Cuvier Valley..)

I went up via Byron Gap and down the East face.
The first bit through the scrub has been taped.

After that you're on your own - not that it is too hard.
Keep to the west and don't climb too early, the scree changes from car sized to human sized and so gets a bit easier to climb.

There is a lovely route from about 2 km up the overland track from echo point to Olympus via Lake Oenone. This route is described in the Aels Volume 1 and John Chapman's guide to the Overland track and the Walls of Jerusalem.

Thanks heaps for your guidance. The next thing I am just hoping for is fairly stable weather but I suppose you cannot hope for every thing. Simon

My plan is to go through the Byron Gap down to the southern end of Petrarch then go up from there? Thanks Nuts I might back track and go up through the gap as I will stay at Petrarch the night I think

I've been about half way down from the top (southern end of the northern peak) towards Lake Petrarch, and then went back up again (don't ask). Looks like it would have been easily doable the rest of the way down to the plain. I wasn't following any markers or notes - just making up my own route.

PS. There was also some similar discussion around similar questions in this topic: viewtopic.php?f=3&t=15664 . May be of use or interest.

We did it as a day trip from L. Petrarch. Went up from Byron Gap and followed the skyline route over all the boulders to the plateau - fairly hard work. Icefest's route sounds better. We went straight down off the western side of the plateau back to the Lake. Was a lot easier than the route we used to go up. Scrub in some places but gravity was on our side.

That's sounds the plan head towards the gap between the Plato and the 7 apostles on the right and then go up from there ?
