Which sunglasses

Tue 06 May, 2014 10:29 am

For snowshoeing?

And where to buy them from?

Would be good if:

1. they were lightweight (i.e. comfortable)
2. Had very good coverage.
3. Were not silly expensive.

I'll assume you are a man. Many of these 'glasses are available from larger pharmacies.

Thanks,

I was hoping there was a full coverage version of cycling sunglasses (i.e. something significantly lighter) someone knew about. I find the big glasses uncomfortable after a while.

I use these, not for snowshoeing specifically but for when I want cheap sunnies that will spend time rolling around in my pack. $12 from Bunnings.

Assuming that gives the same UV protection as more expensive glasses I like the concept - lighter, doesn't matter if they get scratched/lost.

Do you have a set of ski Goggles? If you have some already it might be the cheapest.

They're also nice and warm.

The description appears to be for the clear version. From memory they are Category 3 UV Protection (I won't buy anything that isn't).

Yes, I think I have goggles somewhere, but they tend to be too warm and not cut out enough light in bright conditions.

If you're after a set of cycling style glasses I use a set of Bolle Safety glasses. They are the 'sidewinder' model and come in tinted and clear among other colours. They are available at Rays Outdoors for around $20. Very light and very similar in style to most of the expensive cycling glasses. So far they are holding up quite well and are no worse to look through than some $100+ dollar glasses I have had in the past.

As most have said go to your local safety gear shop (BOC Gas etc) and check out the range of safety glasses. I used to wear the sidewinders a lot but there are plenty of different styles. They are cheap (free depending on your job) so it doesn't matter if they break.

Thanks guys

FWIW. Any of the well known brands of polaroid sunglasses worn by fisherman will do the trick. Brands like Tonic, Maui Jim, Spotters, etc will block out EVERY bit of harmful UVs. You can get all in poly carbonate or glass lenses, different hues and all are photo chromatic. Not cheap but quality. Can be made to prescription too.

For the fishing glasses, do I need to go to a marine-specific shop or they around generally?

Re: Which sunglasses

Gday stu, you will find them at most tackle retailers, jump on the net and you should not have any problems. I am actually getting another pair and am going with the Tonics this time. Any of the above will serve you well.

The Tonics are a newish brand by the guy who started up Spotters and have had excellent reviews. I am along time fan of the spotters, but they are heavy in glass, and exxy, especially in prescription. The photochromatic polarising lenses are excellent.

I like the idea of photocromatic -- the negatives being they seem to have a definite shelf life (I have a pair of cycling glasses only 3 or so years old that no longer "change") and perhaps they don't go as dark (or light) as needed for snow.

Re: Which sunglasses

I have not found the photo chromatic deminshed on any of these glasses, I have different coloured lenses for different stuff. One thing I did notice with the Tonics is they are close to perfect in optical correctness, better than the Spotters in this regard, it's quiet noticeable between the two. Glass maybe a bit heavier , but it's my pick for glasses, get a lighter frame to compensate.

Re: Which sunglasses

I didn't think glass sunglass lenses were made any more... I'm assuming they don't recommend them for sporting activities where there is a chance of breakage?

Re: Which sunglasses

Not at all stu, every pair I own is glass. Much prefer it to carbonate. Glass is the most popular by far. Good sunnies are a must imo. You should always wear a lanyard (loose fit or tight) anyway. I have dropped them from time to time and not broken any yet, did scratch the glass a tiny bit. Amber is the most versatile lens.

I'm serious and not just for sunnies but any glasses. You put them somewhere but can't find them but Is there some kind of thing you can put on them that makes them trackable or gets them to emit a shrill whistle or give an accurate gps fix on you phone map. Any suggestions most welcome. Cheers.
