Confused converting DMS to GDA/MGA

Just prepping for the Aussie 10, I have the coordinates for all the peaks in DMS......

How do I covert DMS to the grid on the map....google hasn’t been overly helpful.

You could also enter them in your GPS as DMS and then change the projection/datum in the gps settings and they will be transformed for you

I tried that site but couldn’t make sense.

I’m not chasing GPS files.....I ok with reading map to ground.

Just wonder if there is a was to convert.....the lat/lon for summit is easy to spot on the map.

I guess what I’m asking if I pick a spot on the map....6 or 8 reference is easy, how does one convert to lat/long? Is is it not required

I’ll check when I get, pretty sure inside that one last night but it didn’t come close to being correct on the map.

As you appear to have the topo maps why not just use a ruler and get the coordinates in MGA/GDA format off the topos. The grid lines on the map make that a very simple job.

For an electronic method - Easiest way considering you are only looking for 10 peaks, just go onto six maps (NOT the etopo version),
Select the Coordinate tool from the top central tool bar,
Select the coordinate system you want,
Pan and scroll around and then click on a peak.

If the weather is reasonable then you won't need them, just walk up each lump of mountain until you can't go any higher - proclaim it "bagged" and descend towards the next one. They are not hiding in head high scrub and there are not a million false summits. It is also reasonable to assume that the peaks are where the topo map says they are (apart from South Ramshead)

I have no problem with topo maps....and a.m. comfortable doing this walk.

What I was chasing was if somebody gave me a lat/long of day a meet up point that wasn’t easily identifiable on the map was how to convert it.

When you say not close....how far out is it. Could it be that the map you have or the coordinates you were given were AGD instead of GDA?

This seems a good option as it allows entry in D or DM or DMS.
Putting in -36.5,148 (the corner of the OP's map) gives 55H 5 89 557 59 60 127 which matches the grid refs shown on the map.

If you hover over any point on http://maps.ozultimate.com/ it will give you the decimal degrees (DD), 6 figure grid reference and full UTM grid reference. Useful if you have internet, not so useful otherwise.

There is also a cut down mobile friendly version at https://maps.ozultimate.com/topo - which has DD and 6 figure reference.

I don't do DMS since they're not very useful in Google Maps or GPX files.

If you want something that will do the conversion on your walk, as others have said, your GPS can certainly convert. Also, have a look at OruxMaps - it's a little clunky, but can certainly convert Lat/Lon to UTM. Download the relevant tiles before you go.

I have a Suunto Traverse watch.
It can give me gps coordinates, but not in a format that works with maps using GDA.

I generally hike with map and compass but would like to use the Traverse to give me a gps coordinate so that I locate my position on a map. I will not be in areas where I can get online and do a conversion.
Is there a way to do the conversion from wgs84 to gda94 in the field?

The difference in 2000 was 0.45m .. that is a lot less than the error of the GPS.
The difference will be a little more now due to the plate shift .. but old maps won't have that anyway.

Not something a bushwalker should be worried about .. just use WGS84 as gda94.
