The issue (or non issue) is not with the maps. The issue is with the Mapsource program. Its released by garmin to use with their GPS products. Its available for download on their website because they are too cheap to put a CD in the box when you buy a GPS. Magellan do the same with their Vantage Point software. However the licence agreement for this piece of software (MAPSOURCE not Shonky maps) is such that it is not freeware, shareware, GPL or any other free software. Therefore downloading it purely to use with shonky maps without previously having purchased a Garmin GPS unit of some sort breaches these terms of service. The original poster posted this thread with the purpose of showing people how to get "Maps for free on your PC for all of OZ" not how to load the maps on GPS. Shonky maps are named shonky because that is the Net Nickname of the fella who packaged them up. They are not in any way shonky, all the data in them is freely obtained and free to redistribute. I am an advocate of free software, and there is plenty of good free mapping software available, however Mapsource is not it.
The above message is purely informative, I have used mapsource and vantage point extensively in the past having downloaded free from their respective websites. People should be aware of the facts however.
