Must have ESP... was just wondering the same thing. The wet summer has left a lot similar roads worse for wear.

Before the Gungarlin River, you need a proper 4WD, not an all wheel drive, as there are some deep ruts in the road not far from the river. Also the river is too high at the moment unless you have a 4WD with good clearance.

Have you been there lately? If its dry you can usually get to the river in a 2wd. Getting out in the wet is another matter.

Yes have been there recently and the road as it descends to the Gung river is not suitable for an AWD

There's a bridge though at the Gungarlin. The Bulls Peak R is usually at least 30cm deep, sometimes much more, but it goes up and down quickly. It is probably the deciding factor to if your car is up to it. 2 months ago the road was fine.

Ha! Two months under this weather is an infinity!

Recently you could not even get to the bridge across the Eucumbene: the dirt road had turned into porridge. A 4Wd was sinking beyond the axle.
It turns out there is a spring under the middle of the road at any time of the year; with all the rain it has been booming! The soil is clay and very poor granite gravel.

I gather the Council has fixed it up a bit and put in a drain pipe under the road to divert the spring. How long this will last is anyone's guess.

The road down to the river has been badly eroded. High clearance is needed. The bog holes at the bottom are a bit boggy.

The Ford at the Gungarlin has been damaged by the flooding, and the far bank seems to have lost its gravel. Last report I saw was that you could not get out of the Gungarlin on the far side because of the mud. The bridge is still standing.

Shortly after the Gungarlin crossing the road used to go through a bad mud patch, before the climb up to the 1st gate. Then the RFS fixed it up - but without a culvert. (And they moved the gate to a better position.) Now the 'mud patch' has been reported as a 'car-swallowing bog hole'. With a real 4WD some have got past it by going up some way on the left bank, but how long this will last is anyone's guess. It will erode.
