I would consider listening to music, particularly Baroque chamber music, but I usually bushwalk with my daughter (7), and she sees bushwalking as an opportunity to talk about everything!

Not that I mind though- it would be pretty insensitive of me if I did. But mind you, there was this once, at Cradle Mountain, when I suggested that we practice "Walk more and talk less." It seemed so innocent, and catchy. So Laura told everyone we passed, "I'm practicing walking more and talking less, just like my Daddy told me."

Yes, this made me feel lower on the evolutionary scale than the leech. Man did I get some grumpy looks from the people we ran into...

Love it  It certainly beats "are we there yet?"

I remember taking our son (now 28) to Hartz Mountains when he was about 5. I was wanting him to get a sense of awe from the huge landscapes and the vast mountain we were approaching. Instead he lay down on the ground next to a pool and looked at frogs. Awe comes in lots of different sizes :o

cheers

what do other people listen to when they are out bush?

When I go bush, I like to rest my ears from the harsh sounds of civilisation and enjoy the wind in the trees, breaking surf etc, then the first music I play after a few days always sounds fantastic - but when track walking, AND going uphill, I see no point in wasting my breath, and pull out my Blues Harp and play a few tunes. Usually bush ballad/folk tunes that I can pace to.
