A PLB is not a gadget. It is a life saving device.

So does that mean an ambulance isn't a vehicle? It's also a life saving device...

How about when we didn't have mobile phones and if you were out u had to que up at the telecom phone box. Then try to work out how to open the door and even harder to work out how to get out. He he he. Then phone cards came along . So cool then.

I'm a walker... I think that if you have good gear to start with, it should last you a while and if you've made the right choices to start with replacement is a limited need. That being said, I have replaced my original pack, but still use my black wolf mantis, and in most conditions under the snow line it does fine. I upgraded to a jetboil flash which ive usd for three years now with no problems. Still got my original -10 bag. now eight years old. Navi... map and compass and good research for me. I do have a Garmin fenix (a bit of an indulgence, but I do have a watch fetish so kinda had to have one...) that is helful in navigational challenges when required, and the barometer/altimeter is nice info to have in bad weather/ long uphill days. I also changed poles and use a graphite pacer pole, but more for the grip than the wieght. I take my phone for emergencies....
Stick to the basics i say, i used to walk with a guy that had to have ipad, iphone, solar panels to charge them, steripen, plus a few other wieghty items... dont see the point to take all the gadgets if the idea is to get out in the beautiful beyond and away from the noise of life....

I used to think I was a gear freak. A few months without going for a decent walk has taught me my true hobby is bushwalking.

Jayps i agree, I looked at some new gear the other day which was pretty complex. All I saw was more crap I had to think about, so I didn't buy it. I've got enough to worries and stresses without adding any more.
Strider what is wrong with you! There's no excuse mate. You have a tent capable in snow, get out there and live the dream. The high Country is calling you and it's looking an absolute treat at the moment with all this new snow that's getting dumped on it. Go on you know you want too
