Re: Is Bushwalking a Sport?

I think that peter Treseder thought walking was a sport, hence all that ridiculous 'tiger walking' BS in the 90s (somewhat fraudulant as it turns out as well). The americans appeared to want to reinvent walking as 'fastpacking' a bizarre amalgam of lightweight walking and getting somewhere really fast, instead of enjoying the trip.
Making bushwalking competitive reminds me of walking the overland track in the 90s with some army colleagues. Never again will i share a walk with people more intent on getting to a destination and bragging rather than enjoying the walk and all the side trips available.

Bushwalking and scuba diving: The only two activities that I have been involved in that have never really been managed to be turned into competition.

My parents used to go scuba orienteering. That (and cave diving records) is about as competitive as diving gets.

Sport can be defined as "a person who behaves in a good or specified way in response to teasing, defeat, or a similarly trying situation". As such, participating in bushwalking can definitely be a sport, a good or bad sport at times.
