In Tassie, Hobart does it for me, but if I wanted a smaller town, Deloraine area for sure.
In NSW I lived in Katoomba for a while, perfect - but Sydney as the big city is a big downfall.
In WA, Albany - plenty of good walks within 2-3hrs drive(Stirling Ranges/Porongorups/Beautiful coastline and offshore islands, and as a Sandgroper 2-3 hrs is nothing

Launceston by a country mile! Grew up in Devonport but moved to Launceston 42 yeas ago. So many options for walks, close by the magnificent Gorge, Trevallyn Nature Reserve, Mt Arthur, Mt Maurice, Ben Nevis, Ben Lomond, Mt stronach, coastal walks in the Narwantapu NP, Holwell Gorge and all the walks in the Walls Of Jerusalem and Great Western Tiers only an hour away. Cradle Mountain is also less than 2 hours away. I think we have a wonderful range of walks to select from.

Oooohhh, I sense a nth-sth competitive thing emerging.
Let's face it you could live in Oatlands and you have more bushwalking options than most of the country.

Blessed be the apple isle :D

It's not bad in my home town of Del City!

Easy drive distance to walks around the Great Western Tiers - Quamby, Dry's, Liffey, etc.
Then there is the fishing at Great Lake, newly developed Huntsman Lake, walks near Meanders Falls, Bastion Cascades, etc.
Then there are the caves near Mole Creek, walks to Higgs Track, Mother Cummins, Lady Lake, Ironstone, etc.
Then there is caving in the Wet/Honeycomb Caves, easy river walk around the river parklands, Pepper's Calstock for a really posh overnight for that special some-one!
Then there is kayaking down the Meander & Mersey Rivers, trail biking & horse riding the many Forestry tracks, walks up Mt Roland, Arm River Track, Lees Paddocks, etc.
Then there is Cradle & Ben Lomond a little further afield.
Then there is the Deloraine Deli up the main street for great coffee & food, as well as the Christmas Hills Raspberry Farm, ETC Bakery, Ashgrove Farm Cheese, etc.
...and then...well you'll have to find the rest out for yourself! :?

Well...maybe it's a guitar and a banjo, sort of duelling......

haha good one. sheffied probably qualifies, although i reckon those places up in the hills of huon valley fit quite well :D

Hmm, yeah Launnie has the western tiers, mt arthur, ben lomond that you can drive to within the hour, but then hobart has the wellington range, snowy range, and so on.
Can we get a poll going? :P

Not to mention Hobart's access to the SW. In summer I leave home at 5am, get in a 6hr walk off SPR and home in time for dinner.
Case closed I say

Sheffield is the place to be I reckon. Should be an outdoor store there I reckon.
Also Huonville has good promixity to plenty of special places, Farm House Creek, Wellington Range, Weld & Picton rivers among many others.
Wish I could say Coles Bay, what a fantastic place for adventure, but the town is becoming overrun with tourism.

Sheffield does it for me but really, anywhere in Tassie as long as I can go home via Elizabeth Town ETC for a coffee after a walk - and I've gone home the long way a few times!

*sigh* I have resisted, but the temptation was very hard, I nearly found myself on a flight to go check it out.

I know that house, I know how close it is to the highway.
Take a look, Here.
The house is of course the big building just above the A marker.
Have a look at how wide the road is, and also how close the house is to the road.
The speed limit there is 110, and it is going up a hill (as you head up in that link) so the engines will be revving quite hard close to your house.
Sure there's a fence, and you could probably do more to block the noise, but...

If you want local knowledge, feel free to ask.

And one more factor in favour of Jindabyne: the Prawn Burgers at the Jindy Fish Shop. Bliss.

ps: Launceston? Phurt!! Smog; dark, dirty, narrow streets and the worst one-way system in the world - possibly the entire Galaxy. My first few solo visits back in the 70s I invariably found myself driving the wrong way down a one-way street because the damned things weren't signposted!!! If one must live in/near a city give me Hobart any day.

Perhaps it was the driver not the town as I suspect in the 70s you were a brash young know it all !! I have never had a problem with Launcestons one way streets whenever I have visited from the late 60s and still don't today

I repeat: No 'No Entry' or 'One Way' signs at the corners. No way of knowing they were one way streets until you were halfway down them and confronted by a wall of traffic, all moving in your direction.
I was never a brash know-it-all young driver. I just morphed into an arrogant know-it-all old driver after I moved to the mainland and found out that almost no-one up here has any idea of how to handle either roundabouts or winding roads.

Re: The ultimate aussie town

You need to come back for a grown up look look and forget ancient history,"never a brash know -it - all young driver " is there such a beastie ??

Re: The ultimate aussie town

I've been back often enough to know that Lonnie and Burnie are at the top of my get-out-of-town-as-quickly-as possible list. Admittedly, there's been some improvement on the one way street issue - there is now adequate signage. But it's still a smoggy, dark, dingy, narrow-streeted, cold, 'orrible little place that's as easy to get lost in as Canberra, but less than a tenth the fun.

Oh yes. I was self-taught and unlicenced for the first few years - and nervous as hell about getting caught - so 'brash' didn't come into it.

Tasadam is right, Kainas, you would have B Doubles roaring past your front door. It's pretty scary BUT the view out the back is really lovely farmland. Sorry.

Stepbystep, my apologies for forgetting Heidi Farm Cheeses & yes, their tilsit is good but IMO with regards to cheeses, King Island are THE masters! Smoked Cheddar with qunice paste & Triple Brie with strawberries...mmmm..magic! (Sorry Ashgrove you're still good!)

.,..and sorry about the thread!

Hey lyndoor ,

Bah, you're preaching to the unconvertable(is that a word?), mind you the KI Discovery Ash Blue hmmmmm.

Oh and there's better bushwalking around Deloraine than KI  Trying to get back to topic you see.

Thanks Corvus for keeping my best interests to the fore!!! All in moderation of course

Yes, thankyou stepbystep, not aware of many walks on KI. I'm sure there are some lovely ones. Bit isolated on a long term basis for me. Deloraine is far more central.
