We attempted to go to Black Bluff last weekend via the Maxwell Track. Got to the river, which was flooded, and tried rock hopping across but to no avail. We used up just about all the rocks laying around trying to bridge across, weren't too keen on walking though - too cold and too deep. Pity as I've never been up, there's always next time!

Good luck Amanda on becoming a Peak Bagger Extraordinary!

Hahaha Well planning is still in motion, and due to only having access to one 4wd Western is now out of the picture. Black is still happening tho and trying to look at other peaks in the area!
But of course your welcome Oli!

What in the blooming blue blazes is a 'dishonourable' peakbagger?

Only time I've ever 'counted coup' on summits was as a part of a bet with one of the boyfriends as to who would finish the AAWT first and who would score the most peaks doing it. Pity the bet got cancelled before I finished. But it's still an impressive list . . .

A peakbagger who is between 100 and 199 points. See previous page for list/rankings

Re: Are you a peakbagger?

Interesting. After reading all this I checked the list and started counting points, and was shocked to find I have over 50. There are some odd omissions from the list, however - Crater Peak, Naturaliste Peak, The Watcher . . .

And I really don't think Wellington should be worth any points unless you've climbed it from at least as far down as the Waterworks. For those who've driven up to the summit carpark, it should be -2.

Re: Are you a peakbagger?

Mon 28 Sep, 2009 8:03 pm

Haha agreed! And if youve ever been to snowhill... well 2 points is a joke.

Naturalist and the watcher are on "the old" list seems they are unworthy these days

Re: Are you a peakbagger?

Mon 28 Sep, 2009 8:24 pm

I just counted as well got to 31 points, I guess you normally don't count if you have been up there twice that would be 38 than. I probably would not count myself a peakbagger in the sense of climbing every peak, but I'm normally very disappointed if I'm out there and can't climb any peak.
BTW: 31 points was just in the last 2 years.

No only count each peak once!
Not bad, Ive done 60 points in the last 5 months.....

Re: Are you a peakbagger?

I was amazed how many named peaks there are when I read the list, many I haven't even heard of. Been to Mt Eliza recently and next time I get own there I'd like to do some of the not so popular peaks Mt. Mueller seems intersting

Re: Are you a peakbagger?

Mon 28 Sep, 2009 8:59 pm

Mueller is a VERY nice walk! Quite underrated! Dont be fooled into thinking youve reached the summit on the first part of the ridge though, It's 5 metres higher 3k's or so down the ridge......

'bin ages since my last post and what better subject than this...

Yes, I'm certainly a peak bagger. I love ticking summits off The Abels and The Peak Baggers Guide to Tasmania although marriage and parenthood has certainly slowed me down in the past decade or so.

A few weekends ago, my family gave me an early fathers' day present by saying I could take off on the day before and go for a walk on my own somewhere. Having done a family walk in deep snow near Devils Gullet the week before, I didn't feel too guilty.

Tassie Peak baggers would be familiar with my target peak for the fathers' day walk, Mount Remus via Recondite Knob. Unfortunately, given the fresh thigh-deep snow, I had to cut my plans short and settle for Back Peak. Cimbing the slope immediately before Back Peak involved frequently sinking in snow up to my arm pits. At that point, almost half my time was gone so I knew Remus and even Recondite were out of reach if I was going to make it home to collect the family in time to drive to Rocky Cape and call a bushdance that evening.

In any case, I think Back Peak gets a guernsey on the Peak Baggers Guide. I can't be too much of a tragic peak bagger as a few weeks have passed and I still haven't got around to checking. Perhaps someone can save me the hassle, check for me and let me know how many points I scored. I suspect it's probably a measly one pointer.

In summer I plan to return and settle my score with Recondite and Remus without the snow. I may even knock over Heap of Rocks on the way back.

According to this list, from a quick skim through I'm about 104. Fair chance I've missed some.

Re: Are you a peakbagger?

Tue 06 Oct, 2009 5:17 pm

Yup. thats the old list. I was working off that list until recently Stu pointed out a few of the peaks are no longer on the new revised list, and I had to deduct several points off my tally

Re: Are you a peakbagger?

So is this the correct list? http://www.hobartwalkingclub.org.au/htm ... aggers.pdf

Or this http://www.geocities.com/Yosemite/Cabin ... sGuide.htm

Or are they the same?
At least 102 but I need to check some maps to see where some of those names are. Brain fade.

Re: Are you a peakbagger?

Tue 06 Oct, 2009 6:22 pm

I think the first one is if not correct, very close.
Stu knows the link to it as he has sent it to me. Hopefully he'll see this tomorrow and confirm....

Re: Are you a peakbagger?

The first list was published in the 1968 Tasmanian Tramp (HWC annual journal). Word is it was originally a bit of a joke and included a 'peak' on a club members property where a working bee was held or some such story

http://www.geocities.com/Yosemite/Cabin ... sGuide.htm

is the second list (revised 1968 version) published in the Tramp in 1983. My ex made that website back in 1999, it is an old website! This is the 'old' list people refer to and the list any peakbaggers who have been peakbagging for more than 10 years originally used.

http://www.hobartwalkingclub.org.au/htm ... aggers.pdf

is the 'new' (third revised) list which came out in the Tramp in 2000. Peakbaggers of the time (myself included) sighed, embraced change and changed their points tally to the 'new' list. This is the list most commonly in use today :)

Thanks Amanda!
Do you know if the really old school baggers changed to the new list as well??

Re: Are you a peakbagger?

Anyone wanting an excel version of the latest list, as kindly linked above by Amanda, please send me a PM & I'll forward it on.
I also have an excel copy of Bob Browns 500 peaks list, another kettle of fish all together (this list even includes Mt Hamilton on Macquarie Island!).
MJD has recently compiled a list of 'High Places of Tasmania', this list has a total of 974 peaks on it!!!

Making lists is a human condition & for OCD types, myself probably included, a way to keep track of expended hyperactivity.
It's all just an excuse to get into our magical wilderness areas, not necessarily a reason

Not wanting to sound like a tosser, but...
I like to think of myself as a "Peak Sharer" bagging makes it sound like taking something away.
What I do is share the natural beauty and energy that I feel is focused around Tassie's peaks.
Whatever change is effected by theese experiences certainly becomes addictive.
Not being able to constantly feed this addiction causes one to start making lists for the next Peak, counting down to the next peak,
checking maps, googling track notes and photos, then finally languishing on Bushwalk-Tasmania in the final throws of agony until the weekend comes and I can go and get another fix.

Wouldn't change it for the world though :)

Does anyone know of a mainland peakbaggers list, as detailed as the Tassie one? I've tried googling but nothing decent has turned up . . .
