While 99.999% of snakes just want to get away when they cross paths with something the size of a bushwalker, when you meet that one in 10,000 that's REALLY seriously pissed off about something, it livens up the day no end.

When digging a hole just remember to have the towel in front of you afterwards

The note "Track not suitable for horses" on a Rooftop map should never be taken as a guarantee that there is a discernable track.

You know when you are doing VERY long climbs or simply doing a long tough walk and your shirt gets so sweaty and with your pack on the sweat just doesn't seem to evaporate?

Well, over my last two walks I've found that taking my shirt off for 5 minutes and putting my shirt on a rock or tree in the sun whilst having a snack break really helps the sweat dry off! A dry back really makes a difference to the level of enjoyment. Also, it is a great way to cool down - if the weather is appropriate for it of course.

Camping anywhere near a creek in SW Tassie is not a good idea.

I thought it was only asparagus that made it smell?

Asparagus makes your urine smell.

The worst I have come across for fart potency were Native Pepper Berry sausages. I think I kept myself awake after two of those that night!

The asparagus effect works only on certain type of people, it's genetic, just like having a chin dimple.

I think it affects the smell of all people's urine. However there is a gene that determines each person's ability to smell asparagus in urine.

I've looked it up and apparently we're both right : some people don't have the enzyme in their stomach to produce this odor in their urine, and some people can't smell it when it's there. I hate this smell.

Interesting - I'd not heard of the other side to that one before. I agree, the smell is rather offensive - I wish I didn't have either of those genes. :-)

Do you have a reference to where you looked it up?

Grilled( or BBQ) Asparagus in my experience does not contribute as much to odoriferous urine quite as much as steamed/boiled :)

If you forget to actually turn the jug on before you fill the thermos - and don't notice anything wrong as you later fill the plunger, let the coffee brew, and pour it into the cups ...
...Enjoy iced coffee!

Where can I buy a template?
I dont want to be ripped off by bricks and mortar is there somewhere I can get it on line, maybe via a mail forwarding place in hte US that doesnt cost too much.
Also the cardboard needs to be lightwight and maybe even double as a sleeping mat and shin protectors in my gaiters.

There's a similar thing with eating beetroot. Some people have different acidity in their stomach, and they don't pee pink, others have a very pretty coloured urine.
I discovered this after making a really nice dish of baked home grown multicoloured beetroots, parsnips, walnuts and goats cheese.
Got a bit worried the next morning and spent 20 mins googling things

Oh yeah I can vouch for the artichoke phenomenon. NB Plant one jerusalem artichoke, and you get 20 tubers to harvest. I'd not take these bushwalking in any form.... lol. At least not with any naked flames involved.

I reread this thread and laughed once again
Dont pitch your tent too close to the one your childen are in if you're going to 'rustle' at all. They can hear everything....then you have to make up akward stories involving looking for lost socks, prickles in the sleeping bag etc.

Never underestimate the average idiot's attachment to his/her thongs.

I thought I was homesick for Tassie. Turns out I'm just sick of Melbourne, or at least of being in one place for so long. It's time to move.

NNW, are you talking "thongs", or what the Kiwis might call "jandells"??

I can understand why people might be attached to their thongs , but not so much to their jandells.

Those horrible, uncomfortable rubber things so many people wear on their feet.

Something else I've realised: I take far too many photos. :(
