Does anyone take a telescope out and gaze at the stars and the planets and if so what do you use.

Just something inhave been thinking of doing.

Cheers.

No telescope but for general stargazing some binoculars can be better although I haven't hiked with any (the wider the main lens, the better the light gathering).
Unfortunately good optics are heavy. Usually just enjoy the stunning view away from city lights.
What I am looking forward to on my next hike with my son is using his smart phone ap that identifies all the constellations and planets etc. (I'm good for a dozen or so but to identify the whole sky will be nice).

I usually just gaze up in awe until I start shivering and head back to the sleeping bag.

One of the most impressive sights I have seen was a strobing Aurora Australis over Cradle Mountain about 20 years ago.
When out on the track It is impressive also to gaze at the large number of satelites circling the night sky, and wonder in awe at what lies beyond. :?:
When I get the i phone 5
I will get the night sky app

A bit of lite humour

A million stars.............
The Lone Ranger and Tonto went camping in the desert. After they got their tent all set up, both men fell sound asleep.
Some hours later, Tonto wakes the Lone Ranger and says, 'Kemo Sabe, look towards sky, what you see?
'The Lone Ranger replies, 'I see millions of stars.'
'What that tell you?' asked Tonto.

The Lone Ranger ponders for a minute then says, 'Astronomically speaking, it tells
me there are millions of galaxies and potentially billions of planets. Astrologically,
it tells me that Saturn is in Leo.
Time wise, it appears to be approximately a quarter past three in the morning.
Theologically, the Lord is all-powerful and we are small and insignificant.
Meteorologically, it seems we will have a beautiful day tomorrow.
What's it tell you, Tonto?'
'You dumber than buffalo s#!t. It means someone stole the tent'

For the technologically minded. I have seen a mobile phone app. Point your phone to the stars and it points out the names, constellations, formations etc.... it is amazing.
