Christmas trips?

Mon 17 Dec, 2012 10:24 am

I'm heading back down to the northern Snowies this year. I'm going to base myself in Schofields Hut and do some exploring. Climbing Mt Morgan is high on my list. What do others have planned?

work work and work.....
new years, kepler and routeburn tracks. prebooked, guaranteed a bunk in the silly season , girlfriend won't use tents and won't walk massive distances to find an empty bunk....

Off to Tassie on Wednesday - Walls of Jerusalem (4 days), Chrissie with rels at Port Arthur (several day walks) then Freycinet (3 days), touristy potter up the West Coast and finish with the Overland Track. A good introduction for my partner in overnight Tassie walks.

Haven't planned anything yet as the amount of time depends on what I get done this week.

Looking at day walks at least so considering South Cape Rivulet or as far as Lion Rock, depending on when I get to the start. Maybe Lake Belcher, perhaps Lake Judd. I went around Tarn Shelf and Lake Webster last Christmas day so can't repeat it this year (might become a tradition. )

if I can determine favourable work requirements really quickly and can arrange it, a few nights out around Melaleuca would fit in nicely.

of course if the weather doesn't cooperate, I may end up doing nothing but........

Everest Circuit. My rest day will be Christmas Day in Namche Baazar. I'll spend the day taking in the surroundings. I hope to walk up to the Everest View Hotel.

Don't think I'll be doing any walking unfortunately. But that will be made up for with lots of sailboarding, followed by a romantic 10th wedding anniversary on a secluded island soon after the new year. Then a family camping trip at the beach with some mates with more sailboarding, fishing, snorkelling as well as a moderate measure of lazing around doing stuff all.

Good to hear Mic! Train 'em right from the start! :-) Congrats, anyhow.

this time of year I usually stay home and grumble about weather being too hot to go camping. may yield to temptaion and head for Kanangra (the park, not the fellow bushwalker) on NYE to watch the sydney fireworks from a good spot.

Only the anual first day of the new year xmas burn-off up the Corker into Barrington Tops for some elevation and hopefully, slightly cooler weather. Can only get a 1 nighter in but it's a start !!

Croajingolong this week end, and then 12 days on NZ South Island. Time to stop eating junk food this week.

Mainly Namadgi, I think. Out of Pocket Saddle, Leura Gap, do the ridgeline to Bimberi, then down to Cotter, up Coronet and along that ridge. Maybe a look at Gudgenby & Namadgi from the Boboyan Road as well.
Then down to Tassie for 10 days, thinking of concentrating on the Southern Reserve - Olympus, Byron, Manfred, Gould, Guardians, DuCanes, that sort of thing. All depends on weather. Could end up redoing the WArthurs or hitting Bobs or just wandering around the Central Plateau avoiding people. Whatever.

22nd - 26th December - Feathertop (3 days), and Mt Bogong (2 days)

26 - 28th Janurary - Mt Feathertop (again!). If family pulls out, will probably just head to Mt Howitt.

17th - 22nd Feburary - Main Range bash, Sentinel, Watsons Crags, Townsend, Ramshead Range

Easter - Considering Speculation, Razor, Viking, Koonika circuit.

If I can sneak anything else in, all the better. Been

Myself and 4 other forum members are attempting a traverse of The Prince of Wales Range starting in the new year which kind of deals with January. In Feb I hope to do the Anne Circuit with a couple of daywalks thrown in and in March I'd love to get back into The Southern Ranges....

Yay, flying to Tassie again very early Boxing Day! Can't believe it's been nearly 2 years since last visit. Based in Hobart for 9 days, just doing day trips. Hope to visit a couple more of the easier SW peaks and maybe explore a bit more around Wellington Range, Hartz Mtns, Huon region, Tasman Peninsula. Haven't done much advance planning this time as I've been very busy with work. I'll probably figure it out on the plane. As time permits I'm sure whatever we do will be great :D. Now where did I put my Hardy & Elson and Chapman books and Tassie topo maps?

Gee some interesting trips planned there NNW. I'd be very interested to hear how you go. I did Leura Gap from Pocket Saddle Hut a couple of years back and really enjoyed it. The country just before the gap is very pleasant in deed. I didn't see any sign of the old hut up there. Not sure if there is much left?

I camped at the hut site about five years ago. Not great weather for walking as it was stinking hot and very very dry. At that point you could tell that there had been something done there by humans, but not much else. It's the ridgeline walk I really want to do - even thinking about heading the other way for a bit to see if I can get up to Ginini. If there's still water in the soaks I'm hoping to be camping up on Bimberi. And I've been eyeing off the Scabbies for years, too. Probably my last real chance to get into that area, given the projected move back to Tassie.

Schofields? Not heard of that one, not that I'm really into huts. Is my knowledge deficient or are you thinking of Oldfields?

Re: Christmas trips?

NNW no its Schofields on the Nungar Plain. I reckon the top of Bimberi would be excellent for camping. There was water up there last Dec. but not sure about this year?

Ok. Melaleuca is out as I can't get a flight in. Out yes, but not in.

Not overly keen on leaving the truck at Cockle Creek for a few nights and Maria island seems to be full.

Getting away on Sunday or Monday sounds good, back Wednesday would be nice but has anyone any ideas? From Hobart and without the need to climb mountains to get somewhere? I don't have the knees or spine for peak bagging, even if just on route.... :-( And the difficult bit - away from the madding crowds if possible. Some people OK, but not hordes.
Thanks

My xmas will be filled with the joy of having BCCs removed from my face and a colonoscopy :|
But lots of good times with family on beachs, in the backyard pool and a bit of rainforest walking around Port Macquarie/Camden Haven :D

Central Plateau? In from MacKenzie, and just wander? Or the Ben Lomond Plateau?
Although I'd have thought the vehicle would be safe at Cockle Creek.

Re: Christmas trips?

Grrrr.... just lost a whole post due to an "internal server error"

I'll start again!

Over 12 months ago, I applied for two weeks leave over the Christmas break to walk the OT with my old man. We were both looking forward to a great time.

But circumstances change.... on the 11/12/2012, my wife and I welcomed our second son into the world. He is happy, healthy, and only wakes once per night for a feed.

So, despite the trip with my old man being postponed until the end of next year, it couldn't have been for any better reason! Dad didn't seem to mind either, he thinks another grandson is more than adequate compensation for a missed hike.

So while bushwalking will have to wait, I'm as happy as a pig in the proverbial - spending my Christmas time off with the wife and my two sons under 18 months.

Wellington river, Wellington Plateau and Moroka river circuit. Over four days Probably push off Boxing day or the day after from The bridge car park on the Welly......

Probably will have a solo meander with attempted renewed enthusiasm with disappointing camera & a couple of new tips - a few days in the Walls area from the 27th, aiming to avoid the crowds but being within cooee distance at times. Never done the Lake Ball / Adelaide circuit, so this might be the time. Might check out Wailing Wall & a few other bits & pieces.

An easy stroll out to Feathertop on the 28th/29th. Looking forward to it as I have two of my children joining me which is a rare occurrence these days.
After New Year will probably try to get back over to the Fortress for further exploration. Then over to Tassie in March. :D :D :D

Enjoy it! Just got back from there a few days ago.

Just a heads up though, the water tank at Federation Hut is not in operation, so you'll need to grab water from either the Feathertop Springs along the Tom Kneen Track (just before it swings to cross the narrow upper NW Spur), or from Feathertop Hut springs.

Probably easier to get it from Tom Kneen Track to be honest, plus its a nicer walk with nicer views. :)

Thanks tigercat. Was it you who inspired me on another post? :)
Unfortunately the achilles is still playing up, so i might not get to check them out this time :( Still, not a bad spot to spend a few days and watch the clouds go by and the light change, and the birds play, and listen to the frogs 'knee-deep' etc etc etc
