doesnt say what type of bees so hard to know how that relates to down under bees
in nz. wasps are the problem, beech forests in places hum with them everywhere. doesnt take much provocation to make them sting. i got attacked out of nowhere once while i was walking in the bush... dont know how many, I was stung before I knew it, several were on me,, i flicked them off and ran for it and they didnt follow me very far... turned out some cows had wandered through aggravating them

Bees (dunno about wasps) have a sort of "no trespassing zone" around their hive. If you get too close to it, they attack. Sometimes you don't realize you're near one until too late. This led to debate about people doing rooftop bee keeping (for honey) in big cities that could endanger people living in lower storeys. Apparently it's fine, but you can't do it on your balcony with it being potentially dangerous for your neighbours. That's even more problematic for climbers who don't see where they're going and can't skedaddle fast enough once attacked.

I was in Arizona about 20 years ago and they were all freaking out. A hive of the African Killer bees (I think that's what they called them) had been found. They are real nasty buggers. When they attack it is not one or two it's the whole hive.
luckily downunder we don't have them.

Don't underestimate what happens if you accidentally step into/on a Euro wasp nest.

I was on a climbing course once when a climber abseiled straight into a hive. He hit the ground running with the hive attacking him and didn't stop until he managed to dive into a creek.. they were still stinging him. He needed an ambulance but pulled through. Iv'e had a sting or two.. like hot pokers i'd imagine.. His dog too?
