Just got back from walking the first five days of the trail from Alice Telegraph Station to Standley Chasm. They have installed new walker camp sites at Simpsons Gap and Mulga Camp.
The Simpsons Gap site although great new shelter (like Jay Creek) with water tanks and drop toilets. If you don't use the shelter for sleeping and prefer to tent it then you are going to be a bit disappointed as unlike the old site just down the track that has sand pits for tents the new site has bare earth and little obvious sign of good camping. The ground is sloping and rocky so you are going to have to take your chances or go back to the old site which is still quite serviceable.
Re Mulga Camp, this one has been moved roughly a kilometre further down the track so you need to do a hill climb past the service road and down the track for a further 500 metres or so. New site has new toilet (which is a bit odorous when the breeze blows) and water tank with two large integrated picnic table bench units. Site is very open with little shade. Again camp sites are average to say the least and based on past stays at the old Mulga Camp is a retrograde step. Judge for yourselves when you go through.

In June Simpson gap had tent sites spread around the new shelter with sand put down in places for tents, nicely rocked edges and were a treat. These were quite good and we used a number of them, pictures of these tent sites are on the official website from memory.
