Mt Solitary with kids

We recently had a successful trip taking some kids up Mt Solitary in the Blue Mountains. They were 6, 8 and 11 and loved the walk - especially the climb. We can't find anyone younger that the 6 year old and are wondering if he's the youngest? Let me know if you know someone younger.

The trip was a bit of an experiment to see how the younger kids went on an overnight walk. The mail goal was for it to be fun for them. I've heard too many stories of people turned off walking from being pushed into by their dads. So we'll keep working on some overnighters with the kids and refine this more. I'm keen to hear other's experiences taking kids outdoors.

We also played with the Go Pro Hero HD camera to get a unique perspective on the walk. I'll be blogging a review of this camera later, but it was fun to play with.

Got me too, but with a Canadian canoe(in good weather) quite achievable.
Have dreamt about a canoe trip to Solitary ever since I saw it......

We got there by sea kayak on a four day trip on Lake Pedder. My only warning would be that the winds and waves can pick up very quickly on the lake and make the crossing back to the lake edge lethal. If you are going to climb the mountain you should take gear just in case you get stuck there overnight (like we did).

it was a great trip - the wind really picked up so we were stuck for the night, but the next morning it was glassy calm. The other bonus of kayaking pedder is you can get some fishing in.

Hi there Geoff,
I just thought I'd let you know that Sydney Bush Walkers are starting to put the occasional kid's walk on their program.
Once you become a full member of the club you can lead your own walks, and put on as many Kid's Walks as you want.
It would be a great way for you and your family to meet other families that are doing similar things.
SBW also has a property down in the Kangaroo Valley that you can camp on down by the river, kids welcome.

I went on my first overnight walk with my parents when I was 8 - my sister was 4 at the time. We did the Coastal walk in Royal National Park and took 3 days. I dont remember much about it except my Dad carried a big pack and we walked on lots of beaches where my sister lost her teddybear- the only thing she carried. I have been told by a friend that she did the Routeburn track in NZ when her youngest son was 6 so that will be my aim.
