Horizontal scars on eucalyptus bark

Has there been resolution of this mystery? I've just visited Tassie and was struck by the prevalence of horizontal scars in bark. Insects seem unlikely - why horizontal! Maybe it's lenticel-based

There are wood boring insects that leave scars like this. Longhorn beetles are one. One type is responsible for ringbarking snowgums. Google will give you plenty of information.
