i saw 'travellers rest' on _ _ _ _ -_ 's avatar a while back and outa interest googled to see where it was.. maybe him?, doesnt seem like a peak head but who knows?

So if I climb up and then call the helicopter that counts? Can I helicopter in and then climb down?

If you can afford the helicopter, then you can, but it ruins the challenge of peakbagging. I for one have had the unfortunate experience of claiming some peaks, only to be rescued on the way home.

I admire those who can because there are a good many peak that are now way beyond me, either climbing up or climbing down.

Yes you can. But if you do please save a seat for me as there's a few that would come in handy with a Chopper!!

Good to read today's Examiner and see that he got out safely - airlifted by SES. It reports that he (named by The Examiner as Matthew Davis - 29) was found by ground searchers on the Reynolds Falls track shortly before 2pm.

I actually went through High School with Matt, nice fella. Good to see he's safe.

My congratulations to the search & rescue crews, all involved have done an excellent job!

The peakbagging list is actually an official list made by the HWC with it's own set of rules. It's not something we made up.

A couple of things about this case intrigued me.

Firstly, I'm intrigued by his route. News reports said he was walking from Black Bluff to Mount Beecroft. Is that right? Did he really leave his car at Loongana or Winterbrook and try to walk all the way to Mt Beecroft and back? That's an epic walk of 44kms - a big ask for a day walk!!!

More likely I expect he was walking from where the Belvoir Road crosses the Black Bluff Range which would be a round trip of 10kms.

If I can believe other aspects of the media report, it sounds like he was found on Ossies Track 3km from Reynolds Falls. I've often wondered what it would be like to walk down off Beecroft to Reynolds Falls. If the reports are correct, Mr Davis has done just that.

Secondly, the Advocate helpfully included a what-to-bring checklist which included things like warm clothes, food and an EPIRB! There was no suggestion of a map, compass or GPS. Mount Beecroft, the Black Bluff Range and the neighbouring Vale of Belvoir are fairly open, easy walking. There's a thumping great big east-west road running through the middle. Even with the tiniest bit of map/compass skill, following the red part of the compass needle for a while would take you from the Mt Beecroft area to the road. I suspect Mr Davis was caught in low cloud on a featureless flat-topped ridge with no way of knowing which way north is. Without any navigation equipment, that's a nasty predicament!

I strongly object to a what-to-bring check-list that includes an EPIRB but no self-help navigational aids!
