what time of the year would be considered the quietest to walk the Overland Track(winter i presume) and what other tracks equal to the OT that are not as well known?

You are right in thinking that winter is the quietest time on the OT track. It is also the time when you need to be particularly fit due to the potential of having to wade through snow and need to take lots of gear for safety. It would be useful to take snow shoes just in case; there had been 1.2 metres of snow at Waldheim on Friday ( see Joel's comments).

A group of us did the Overland Track in Winter 2004 in August, we walked north to south and only saw a couple of people near Narcissis. We had all the huts to ourselves every night, The plateau near kitchen hut had 5-6 foot of snow. (first time I've used the top door at Kitchen hut). We do a decent winter walk each year, One year we did Frenchmans Cap. Last year we went to Walls of Jeruslem, lots of snow. I love winter walking and prefer it to summer. There are three things I hate when bushwalking, Snake, Crowds and leeches. Winter gets rid of all of them.

It's dead at the moment. Less than three cars in the car pack at night for the past couple of weeks.
