Saw one of those cheesy US adverts the other day - where they've thrown mud, paint, coke, mustard on to shoes and shirts that have been sprayed with NeverWet...

Is it a gimmick?

Hah - I swear by that for my car windscreen...
Best product ever!
Not so sure it'd work on boots and tshirts tho

They are all chemicals with strong hydrophobic property. Question is how well each adhere and hang around over time.

Yep, works great on any non-flexible surface that you don't care about the color. the magic stuff on the ads turned out to be far too toxic for consumer use, so the consumer stuff is not quite as good. for what it was intended for, it supposedly works great, and that is as a waterproof electronics coating. As with anything, there might be an application for it somewhere, but I'm not sure what it would be.

All those things rub off very quickly. Great in the lab, slightly 'less than great' in the field. Pity.
Cheers
