A place to chat about gear and the philosphy of ultralight. Ultralight bushwalking or backpacking focuses on carrying the lightest and simplest kit. There is still a good focus on safety and skill.

Ultralight Bushwalking/backpacking is about more than just gear lists. Ultralight walkers carefully consider gear based on the environment they are entering, the weather forecast, their own skill, other people in the group. Gear and systems are tested and tweaked.
If you are new to this area then welcome - Please remember that although the same ultralight philosophy can be used in all environments that the specific gear and skill required will vary greatly. It is very dangerous to assume that you can just copy someone else's gear list, but you are encouraged to ask questions, learn and start reducing the pack weight and enjoying the freedom that comes.

I cancelled the order for the H52F and opted for the H600F.
I like using rechargeable batteries. Rechargeable batteries are my preference.

Looking at the specs, i don't notice much of a difference in weight between the two torches.

Its actually a necessity if you don't use Lithium's.

I should have my torch on Monday, Its already in Brisbane. The charger is here, the batteries are delayed, eta for those are mid week to end of week.

I noticed that the torch includes a headband in it's price, I had ordered a headband not thinking one is included by default. If I stuck with the H52, I was going to use Eneloops, own a whole pile of them.
Exciting week coming up, got a few new toys arriving, not just the Torch, but some other Magical Items, which should be fun to take on some of my bushwalks, particularly if there's other bushwalkers about.

Not sure if others have noticed but a quick look at Zebralight this morning revealed they don't ship certain models to Aus eg H 51. Anyone the wiser on this?

Maybe it's because they are existing US stock and placed on sale for the local market. Products shipped to us here in Australia have all (AFAIK) came directly from China.

Good logic there. Makes sense.

The battery arrived today for my Torch. I just went outside and it lit the whole backyard, that surprised me. Great torch. Has a terrific throw and I love the color output. Very impressive.

Here is a couple images I just taken outside, One at full brightness the other at it's lowest light output.

Is that the lowest low output? 0.3lm or something?

Re: Headlamp

Looks a bit bright to be low-low. Is this a floody version?

Hey Phil

Looks great. Any chance you could weigh it with a battery and headstrap. I might have to buy another headlamp...........
One of these might be a good option for a few ultra trail marathons I'm entering next year where I'll only be in the dark for a few hours either side of daylight.

It's the lowest setting I could find, I don't fully understand the controls on the torch. I haven't really had to much time to work out the controls thus far. There's something about sub levels that I don't understand how to get to. So far I can find three light output modes, Low, Medium and High, the low and high light output that I have found is shown in the image I posted above.

Battery, head-strap and torch weighs: 124 grams.

The weight is not a concern, I don't really feel the torch while wearing it on my head. It's a bit of a technical torch. I can't figure out the different sub level modes.

This is the Floody version.

That's my impression as well, I also thought it appeared to be brighter than what I expected in the low setting. Like I said before, it may be the different sub levels in each mode, which is confusing.

Here are the different light output in each sub level:

Light Output (runtimes)

High: H1 1038 Lm (PID, approx 2 hr) or H2 630 Lm (PID, approx 2.5 hrs) / 335 Lm (3.9 hrs) / 152 Lm (11 hrs)
Medium: M1 65 Lm (30 hrs) or M2 30 Lm (66 hrs) / 11 Lm (172 hrs)
Low: L1 3.5 Lm (16 days) or L2 0.4 Lm (2.5 months) / 0.06 Lm (4.6 months) / 0.01 Lm (5.5 months)
Beacon Strobe Mode: 0.2Hz Beacon at Low / 0.2Hz Beacon at H1 / 4Hz Strobe at H1 / 19Hz Strobe at H1

Long press from off to get into low. Then double click to get into the even lower submode.

Re: Headlamp

Thu 28 Nov, 2013 10:30 am

What is confusing is that you can select which submode you want for each level.

Why couldn't they say that in the manual. As soon i read your explanation on the Submode I understood it straight away.

I am guessing now that the image I taken in low mode is probably 3.5 Lumens. I can get 16 days battery life at that power output. Wow!

What I was doing last night was Holding the switch down and cycling through from Low, Med and High. I didn't know about the double press to get into the submode.

Does it remember these submode you have chosen when you switch the torch off or does it revert back to high power mode when you switch on for each submode?

I don't know what I would ever do if it was not for you guy's on this forum, I probably would have eventually figured it out, but at least now I don't have to worry about it.

I accidentally configured a sub mode to be a strobe when playing once. It took a few minutes to fix that.

The interface is great.... Just don't dig too deep.

Re: Headlamp

Thu 28 Nov, 2013 12:07 pm

It remembers your choice when turned off and through battery changes.

Where multiple options are available for the submode, double click six times then pick the one you want before turning the light off to set it.

Wait what? The website says you can use Alkalines and that's what I've been using so far.

They will work...but only properly for about 5 minutes until they become unable to run the light at full output.

Phil, your pics have me wondering if I'm looking at overgrown sandpits or under grown vege patches ;) Or maybe just mixed terrain for tent peg testing?
