Headlamp

A place to chat about gear and the philosphy of ultralight. Ultralight bushwalking or backpacking focuses on carrying the lightest and simplest kit. There is still a good focus on safety and skill.
Forum rules
Ultralight Bushwalking/backpacking is about more than just gear lists. Ultralight walkers carefully consider gear based on the environment they are entering, the weather forecast, their own skill, other people in the group. Gear and systems are tested and tweaked.
If you are new to this area then welcome - Please remember that although the same ultralight philosophy can be used in all environments that the specific gear and skill required will vary greatly. It is very dangerous to assume that you can just copy someone else's gear list, but you are encouraged to ask questions, learn and start reducing the pack weight and enjoying the freedom that comes.

Common words
Base pack backpacking the mass of the backpack and the gear inside - not including consumables such as food, water and fuel
light backpacking base weight less than 9.1kg
ultralight backpacking base weight less than 4.5kg
super-ultralight backpacking base weight less than 2.3kg
extreme-ultralight backpacking base weight less than 1.4kg

I'd counter that stry, well the running comment anyway. I agree on the rest. I have a handfull of ZL's now, Yes I'm a junkie when it comes to them. Latest order I'm waiting on is a SC62D.

My all time favourite running light is my H600FW MKII, seconded by my H52FW when I don't need quite as much punch and shorter run time.
The regular beams with the hot spot IMO is aweful to run with. Your eyes just focus on that darn center hot spot and you loose a little prospective in the floody edges.
As opposed to the floody "F" beams which still light up the trails well but with no hot spot as such it's just a nicer beam to run behind.

In a recent NZ trail race I had quite a few people ask me what my light was during the dark early start section. I'd toddle up behind many a runner who had a LED Lenser / petzl type light in a cool white hot spot bouncing around. They'd see this nice warm, floody colour sidle up next to them and most had some type of comment. Set to H2, 313LM for a 4 hour run time is pretty nice.

For walking it's a little different, My H31 get's most use for that as it's smaller/lighter and has decent throw if required.
I just love the low settings you get with ZL's for camp use.
I am a GEAR JUNKIE and GRAM COUNTER !!

There, It's out. I said it, Ahh I feel better now

Ok now I'm more clear on this, thank you!
Have read a few other forums where they mention that you can cover the lens with a tape or something to make it more floody, that way get the non-F flash light. I am hoping to just get 1 light to use, this is why this "solution" would best suit me.

Apart from that, so many versions and they all look the same, apart from size/flood. I might have to print all the specs out for each one and compare side by side. But if someone can point out a light that would suit the following needs - would be perfect.

Camping, some hiking
Long range viewing (see who is in bush, possibly hunting)
Short range (I guess I can cover the lens for that?)
Not much running/bike riding (very occasional)

I realise there is no one-fits-all option, but the flash lights I used in the past were cheap Anaconda lights, so I won't notice the tiny difference in light diffusion that some of you might.

Thanks a lot

One thing I dont understand, one their website they have 2 similar models, H52 and H52F. Which one is the newer/better model? Or are they good in their own ways?
Basically, if I buy it - might as well get the latest/best version.

Also, how are these for trekking/running? Is the headband ok? I've read somewhere that it can get shaky. Lastly, how is it in rain, can it get damaged or is water resistant?

Thanks

Hi all,

Anyone knows where I can actually purchase the H52 from? Amazon doesn't seem to have any and ebay has the flood version. Their website direct says it's a backorder and the only Australian distributor they told me to use has them Sold out. I'm located in Sydney, any other places you maybe got it from for yourself?

Thank you

Yep, on backorder from them direct.
I wrote them an email to find out when it's coming back in stock, just thought maybe someone knows other distributors.

Ok, got a reply from them:

The current lead time for the H52 is about 3 weeks (if you place your order now). No plans for any updates for the H52 series.

Will go and place that order I guess :-)

Been browsing some of the sales just recently. I wondered what benefits do those bigger headlamp units eg. Petzl's MYO RXP offer compared to one of the narrow beam ZL models? At 140 lumen, even a H52 can beat it at regular 184 lumen. Apart from the 3 vs 1 AA battery and longer run time.

So, got my H52 headlamp delivered, pretty fast actually.
The one I received looks different from the picture on their website, has ribbed sides. Here is a photo of it.

Thought that maybe they sent me the wrong light, as it looks like one of their other headlamps there. Sent them a message, got a reply (this time it consisted of more than 1 word, they are not much on words) :-)

We revised the body style a little bit, nothing else has been changed.

Good consideration. 20% increase in surface area? Do the older designs have a heat issue? Or for grip? More expensive to manufacture.

Hard to say as the junction isn't something I can touch, mine gets quite warm (the whole body) at max output.

LED's are more efficient at lower temps IIRC though so if it keeps things a few degrees cooler even if there weren't "issues" it could help improve performance.

Funny thing one of them flashed there light at me, showing me how bright there $200.00 light was, I hardly squinted, This is before I turned mine on. I said, that's not a light, Check this out, switched it on max and boom lit up the whole road, I dare not shine it in his eyes like he did with me, I think I would have blinded him.

His remark was holly *&%$#!. *&%$#! me.

Were these roadies Phil? Because me and my Mountain biking buddies are pumping out a minimum of 1000lm (some up to 2500lm+). If you're head torch is brighter than that I'd be interested in one too!
