Gossamer Ground Sheet

A place to chat about gear and the philosphy of ultralight. Ultralight bushwalking or backpacking focuses on carrying the lightest and simplest kit. There is still a good focus on safety and skill.
Forum rules
Ultralight Bushwalking/backpacking is about more than just gear lists. Ultralight walkers carefully consider gear based on the environment they are entering, the weather forecast, their own skill, other people in the group. Gear and systems are tested and tweaked.
If you are new to this area then welcome - Please remember that although the same ultralight philosophy can be used in all environments that the specific gear and skill required will vary greatly. It is very dangerous to assume that you can just copy someone else's gear list, but you are encouraged to ask questions, learn and start reducing the pack weight and enjoying the freedom that comes.

Common words
Base pack backpacking the mass of the backpack and the gear inside - not including consumables such as food, water and fuel
light backpacking base weight less than 9.1kg

Gossamer Ground Sheet

Does anyone know where I can purchase the Gossamer (twin pack, 1 mtr x 2.4 mtr) light ground sheet in Australia. The website in America charges a huge shipping cost.

Have you tried sending them a message? In my experience several cottage manufacturers will ship smaller stuff in normal letters (if you agree to take over the risk of uninsured mail.
Men wanted for hazardous journey. Low wages, bitter cold, long hours of complete darkness. Safe return doubtful.

Thanks, I have now done that, they said they would be soon opening an outlet in Australia, so I will wait.

Thanks for the offer, but will wait for their agent to open here in Australia. I wanted to buy new rather than second hand.

Have a chat with Simon at TierGear, I'm sure he could point you in the right direction. Ordered a length of 30denier silnylon for the very same purpose.

Just found out Amazon sell the plain white 43gsm tyvek, that's 2/3 the weight of the usual home wrap (at about 65gsm from memory). A 5x1.5m piece will cost AUD 40 shipped. It's not polycro light but still pretty good.

I stand corrected, never to mis-recall the weight of hone wrap again, thanks Strider :)

Edit: from here https://www.google.com.au/url?sa=t&source=web&rct=j&ei=xmW6VIbmJoTh8AXK8YHYCA&url=http://www.dupont.com/content/dam/assets/products-and-services/construction-materials/assets/SPEC-31%2520-%2520Physical%2520Properties%2520Data%2520Sheet-%2520DuPont%2520Tyvek%2520HomeWrap.pdf&ved=0CBsQFjAA&usg=AFQjCNEAOyQoss5HWUikOY2yz_05xqvSyg&sig2=dTPYauyyv6EHNXuYskYflA

Weight is 1.8 oz/sqyd or 61 GSM, either way I was wrong

Weird indeed 1 yard = 0.9144m, 1 oz = 28.5 grams....

1.8 oz/yd2 = 28.5*1.8/(0.9144^2) = 61 g/m2

I tried google but couldn't get it to give me an answer (usually have better luck with wolframalpha) so I did it the long way above.

My apologies - I was accidentally calculating the linear measurement.
