Anyone got a knoon?

First there was a spork, then came the foon - but what I'm after is something to replace my perfect bit of cutlery that I foolishly broke when trying to multi-task. It was from some snack pack of something or other that nobody in our household remembers putting in the drawer...

It was short enough to fit in my little titanium pot, with a good spreading knife at one end and a small but workable spoon on the other. I don't need a fork, or a serrated knife - just a light and small spreader and a spoon in one. Does anybody know where to get one?

Umm... not sure what from or with? I'm a bit practically-challenged.

Aha! Methinks you have it. :) I've seen other versions that wouldn't work, but a bit of googling showed something that looks very close to the mark.

I was amused by the fact that others have also used that knoon word.
Less amusing was when I came across a BPL thread that I had seen (with the kiwi knoon) proving I had forgotten that name.
Anyway, I found one made in metal (has a small protective cover over the blade) so I might attempt to make my own.

An interesting one was a Civil War version

this particular one is up for sale , $650 USD.

Well there you go! Thanks, Franco. Might give the civil war one a miss, though, as I'm saving for a new tent.

I hadn't even googled it, or checked out BPL. But as I have a tendency to play with words like 'kənife' (just for fun), pork (lots of languages don't have f) & espoon (Spanishesqe)), I quite liked this version as a 2 syllable word - and of course it differentiates it from the more mundane 'noon'.

Now I just have to find the right kiwi knoon for me. Love this BWA community, for things great and small. :D

Nope, but I've got a spork with a serrated knife edge and another with a can opener and stove jet spanner.

Thet's ət əxectly! I like the broad spreading kind of kənife.

My 2 housemates with... ahem...shall we say not perfect recall? ... both have flown qantas a few times in the past couple of years. I'll get the word out to my Qantas-travelling friends. :)

The spoon on the Kiwi fruit thingummies is better than the Qantas whatsit. My recollection is that they are more likely to be found in boxes of (NZ) Golden Kiwi fruit.

Hi Tortoise, if you don't manage to find any packets of kiwis with the knoon you are looking for, PM me with a postal address and I'll send a few different types to you. They come and go pretty quickly in our household so no-one will notice if I move a few on... :D
Cheers,
sim1oz

Thanks for your kind offer, sim1oz, and I may still take it up.

Would you believe I flew Qantas recently? I was prepared, and got an extra knoon from my neighbour, and 3 more from a helpful flight attendant. :) Just as well, because on the second flight, they only had teeny-weeny-headed spoons.

I've been distracted for a while, so will keep an eye out for kiwis - those knoons may even be better. :)

Good to hear! Now that I know the Qantas knoons are good I'll get my hubby to collect them on his trip next week. Can't have too much of a good thing :D

 It is a personal thing, though. It's a bit more of a shovel than a spoon, but it still works for me. It fits perfectly in my Chinese food container lunchbox, and I really like the knife end. See what you reckon.

Aaargggh! For some reason neilmy's crucial picture of the Qantas shovel won't be quoted. :( You'll have to scroll up the thread for that. But here are some of the kiwi knoons we're talking about:

Wouldn't mind one of those. Not as useful when cooking as the spork, but better for eating some things.

It's just a shame itself is not edible as well!

You been watching Masterchef, Zone-5? Might work for an overnighter, but it'd leave you a bit short for the rest of the trip.

When it's just me, I have a small squat pot, and mainly rehydrate, so cooking isn't an issue. The knork end of the spork doesn't work so well for my teenslie pots of spreads, and I never need the actual fork. And the spork is so big and awkward to pack! (Remember the olden days when we each carried a metal knife, fork, and spoon? Or maybe you had the sense to ignore the 'wisdom' of the day.)

Admittedly 'cooking' is a fancy term for what I do, but the spork is a good stirrer. But those kiwi knoons would be better for the camembert & cracker lunches and soups.
As for packing the spork, it just slips in between the lid and base of the pot cozy and stays there. Perfect length.
