so the news says NZ's getting a "heatwave"
temps in the high twenties to low thirties. can i hear people laughing? I can see a lot of Aussies coming over to cool off with that forecast.
my impression of whats hot has ever been the same after being in the tropics in 38 degrees and 100% humidity

That's about the temperature inside my house with the aircon going flat out

Pretty sure what Wayno meant is that NZ is halfway between the equator and Antarctica. Nothing at all to do with Brisbane.

In a place where a "drought" means there has been no rain for a month, the term "heatwave" has somewhat different connotations from here.
36 degrees in Christchurch, where the average summer maximum is 22.5 it is more than just a heatwave, it is extreme.
There has been hotter weather in Christchurch in past years however - the record is 41.6 back in '73.

Personally I find outdoors walking to be unpleasant once the temp goes into the high 20s, especially if there's no wind and the humidity is on the up side. Would not bother with any walks in the mid-30s and beyond unless got stuck with it or in the tropics.

friend in canterbury went down to the river, only there was no water in the river for the first time. theres a new irrigation dam and canals but there hasnt been enough water in the river to allow filling up the dam

wayno - you're not wrong about the heat.

I walked with JohnStrider in the North Island just after Christmas, and the worst day was around 31C with no cloud cover. Doing 34km that day was very hard, and I did get sunburnt on the back of my arms and forearm. For some reason it felt like walking in Aussie 40+C weather. Not much fun at all.

the humidity in the north island doesnt help if you're not used to it.
