I will add this is very near a hut, he had a beacon that wasnt used, the weather was reasonable, he was very experienced, its not a particularly dangerous area for falls.. at this time keep your conclusions to yourself out of respect for the deceased's love ones.

several aussies rescued from tongariro recently no ice axe and crampons, some in running shoes. these tracks require proper boots, crampons and ice axe in winter plus the expeience to use them. plus various others rescued around the country
