Pelion East in the snow July 08 (Warning lots of pics)

Postby Nick S » Mon 07 Jul, 2008 8:36 pm

Some photos of our 3 day trip into pelion hut last week. July 3-5 2008
I was hoping to try out my new pack and sleeping bag in my week off, but after all the bushwalkers weather alerts earlier that week I was a bit sceptical about the chance of getting a bushwalk in.. But the forecast improved and we ended having amazing weather, although there was the occasional blast of wind and snow. The amount of snow around was incredible, we were fortunate to be able to follow the tracks of walkers ahead of us along the arm river track. Many places we were sinking upto knee height in snow.

We had a perfect day to climb East Pelion. The snow was deep to walk through, esp. at the base of East Pelion, but it was pretty fresh so it hadn't iced up yet.

They are wonderful pictures. Thanks for showing them.
I am freezing just looking at them.

Your 6th picture looking towards Barn Bluff & Cradle Mt appears to be looking right onto the top of Toad Rock.

Thanks walkingtas, yeah I feel like going out bush again already..
Brian you spotted that one well, I didn't realise 'Toad Rock' had a name, but I think you're right, we were on that part of East Pelion when I took the photo.

Magic indeed Nick! What fantastic weather conditions, and your photography does the country justice.
They make me long to be out there. Thanks for sharing them.
Note to WIT: they are NOT snaps! :)

If there is I don't know it either, sorry!

Made this comment only half in jest. Being married to a retired professional photographer, have adopted his view of the term as the sort of photo anyone can take without much thought. We sometimes get very cross with the ABC TV weather man who refers to the weather snaps (occasionally shout at him too, but he never hears us).

Photographs/images such as these, taken with thought and skill, are in our view a couple of notches above snaps; the comment was intended as a compliment :)

Dam! I was hoping to learn something new.

haha yeah I got your comment chris, I tend to think of 'snaps' as involving less thought, e.g. 'happy snaps', but no offense taken wt :D
Thanks Mickeymoo, looking through your photo gallery you must have been in many similar places, great photos too.

Great photos!
I was wondering about your process for resizing the images.
You notice the 2nd photo for example, the stripy effect in the sky - gradients of blue, layered, as it gets darker. Visible in other images as well.
These photos have been saved as GIF files. As a result, the compression is such that you lose a lot of detail.
That 2nd photo is a 186Kb GIF file. A direct convert to a JPG gives you an image with the same resolution but at 35Kb.
If your initial conversion in file size can be saved as a JPG, a 186Kb file will reveal much more detail.
I'd be happier to talk more on this if you want to contact me directly.
I can talk to you about dust on your sensor too - possible cause of the black dots most visible in the sky above the sign on the 5th image.
Not being critical - they're great images, just hoping to help further.
Regards.
