Mount Wellington in snow

Fri 15 Jul, 2011 1:28 pm

The road up to the Springs was open last Tuesday so we quickly packed the bags and got up there at 1.30pm. A bit late but we got up to the top in fine weather alright. Well, until we got the plateau. Then we got flattened by the howling wind. Apparently is was blowing up to 110km/h by the time we crawled up to the trig. The weather closed in and it started snowing for a while (no pics). We had already decided to walk down the road to check the snow conditions. Lots of snow down to the Big Bend and then it was clear although that has probably changed by now (the road has been closed on and off since). Awesome day although stiff hiking boots are not a great idea on an 8km road walk

You certainly don't have to go far to get spectacular vistas. To some Mt Wello might be a meh, but I had one of my best days ever last Saturday up there. I was the first one up there in the morning and it was soooo peaceful and amazing. The plan was to walk to South wellington and back but turned around at the Smith Monument junction as there was a small cloud sitting on top. It took me almost 6 hours but only because I stopped every 10m to marvel at the views and the different ice sculptures formed by the wind. Not a breath of wind and mostly clear blue sky. A bit of mist rolled in at some points but it disappeared soon again. As I got back towards the tower there were obviously lots of people having a ball in the snow. Awesome day :D and so close :D

I have got to get up there soon. What's the bet it will all be gone by this weekend? :(
Looking at all the ice and snow photos recently posted has almost convinced me that I will have to toughen up and get out into it. :!:

You have to go gayet! How often does it get this good? It was quite nippy in the morning but very soon it was so warm I walked in a short sleeved shirt. It was very easy to walk in the snow as it was hard enough to stay on top of it except at the S wello end where it became a (little) bit softer. the only sounds I heard all day was some drip drop from the trees as some of the ice/snow melted and fell off in the warm sun. And of course my own steps in the snow which sounded great :)

I'm hoping it will stay a bit longer as I'm NOT done with the snow. This site is good if you can't see it from where you live

This is what it looked like Saturday morning. How could you not want to go :?:

Yep, toughen the .... up
