Dry's Bluff 2 (The Real Summit)

Sun 24 Jan, 2010 11:25 am

More pics from a walk to Dry's Bluff yesterday. We didnt go to the trig point, but along the ridge south to the actual summit!
Was a nice walk! The uphill section is fairly steep in places, the ropes seem to be slight overkill though, and it only took around 2 hrs to reach the plateau, so we were pleasantly surprised after how much you hear about this walk being quite tough!

The boulder hop!

Scouting the way ahead, near this point there seemed to be cairns everywhere! Quite misleading, after some scouting we eventually found the right way and dismantled a few of the misleading cairns

You just couldn't resist rubbing it in, could you. We should have tied you down the day before and not let you get your points!

Nice photos though.

What! You have a dog up there! He looks ill too!....
Seems to me though, that he was in fact the only one to make the 'true' summit

I Would have made an attempt on the true summit myself but I couldn,t see it for the fog.also there is a track to the right of the scree field which is easier to follow.skirting the tree line.

FYI - when the Ollster and I were up there a couple of weeks later, we worked out based on your route description that you'd gone 'an alternative' way.
Hence the lack / 'misleading' cairns, other people have obviously gone that way as well.
We went up an entirely different way to you guys and there were plenty of cairns the whole way.
However on descent we picked up your route which made us awfully confused when we got to the bottom of the scree field.

So when you pass the big rock on the way up, the correct way is left towards the left most boulder field.
The 'alternative way' follows the right side boulder field and has fewer cairns.
There is a short strip of forest between the two boulder fields.

There is a fairly obvious gully at the top, both routes funnel into that.
Just need to watch out on the way down as there are some cairns that will mislead you down the wrong boulder field.
