Denison Range - Stepped Hills/Mt Wright

Postby ILUVSWTAS » Thu 25 Nov, 2010 11:41 am

Yes Eggs we are back!!
It was a good fun trip, even though I was quite sick with a cold. Perfect weather as always in the SW. Even when the severe storm warning came through we only had a good tent testing breeze to put up with. Hardest thing was finding a spot to play cards out of the breeze....

Anyway Someone else can write up a trip report if they wish, but basically we had 2 nights at Rhona, then walked south along the Denison range onto the Stepped Hills where we camped. Next day was across the valley in very hot conditions and up onto Mt Wright where we camped again. Next day was a short walk out to the car.

A warning to anyone going into Rhona, there is a couple of large trees down across the access road meaning a further 3k's each way is needed to walk to reach the start of the track.

Here's a couple of photos to keep you amused until others arrive....

Thanks Frenchy. I felt like crap most of the trip and the camera didnt come out too often.

We could see the top of the Gorge quite clearly from the Steped Hills. I think SBS and MJD got some photos of it, they might be able to post one.

Track starts from Terry Walsh Rd off Range Rd off Tiger Rd off Florentine Rd - Richea Ck tk to Rasselas tk - 6-7 hrs walk to Rhona along a pretty annoying/muddy track, ending with a moral sapping climb up the moraine - hideous if very hot!
The reward is obvious, not suited to large groups as the area is sensitive and vulnerable.

Or at least the track DID start there, starts some 3k's further back now due to some large trees being blown over. I cant see FT clearing them anytime soon....

Not suited to large groups no, but it doesnt stop em. I passed a school group heading in there a couple of years back, 14 kids 2 teachers.....

Haha - yep forgot about that road walk, you now have to walk 3km of Terry Walsh Rd to get to the track! Maybe that will keep some people out of there.

BTW - thanks Nick that pic was taken from a peak just north of The Stepped Hills, the gold and purple hue's were quite stunning!!!
