Good excuse to have a crack at uploading images. This is Lake Marion, an under rated location that surprisingly doesn't appear in calenders etc. By the way, how do I reduce the size of images below 1MB so they can be posted?

This depends on the software you have available to you, but essentially there are two things you can do:
  • Scale it down to a smaller size (and therefore fewer pixels)
  • Increase the compression

With JPEG images (which most people use for photography), you can reduce the quality of the picture (which increases the compression). You can actually reduce the quality down a LOT before it will be terribly distorted to human eyes. For JPEGs, this can result in a vastly smaller file size, for a slightly lower quality picture. The quality option for JPEGs is usually available during the saving process for most image applications. Most applications default to about 80% quality. Try 50% quality and see how much difference that makes to file size (and viewable quality).

NB: When dealing with JPEGs, avoid saving, then opening, then saving, then opening then saving, etc. Because JPEG compression is lossy, every time you save the file, the saved file may be lower quality that the one you opened. Successive open/saves could cause successive losses in picture quality. So always start with the original when possible.

(You can still save as often as you like along the way while doing various image processing steps, but don't save, then close then open to continue your work).

This doesn't affect non-lossy image files, such as PNG.

How do you insert images without the annoying scroll bars? Grrr :?

Yep, that is annoying. It only happens for attached images. If you use embedded images (ie, images hosted elsewhere, using the 'img' tags) you won't get the scrollbars.

Even when you do get the scrollbars with attached images, you can click the image to see it in place without scrollbars.

EDIT: I've found a hack that fixes it. Should be all OK now. :-)

Being new to this site, I thought I'd have a tentative go at uploading some images. If all goes well I'll try a few more later :?:

Whynotwalk
Welcome to the site. Looks like you have done quite a bit of walking in Tas.
Very nice photos. I think the West Coast area is quite special, and the Tyndall range in particular.
I think you will find your unnamed tarn is Lake Tyndall.
Compare some of the photos in http://bushwalk.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=9&t=718 where we camped on the side of the lake.

Hi Brian - lovely photos, thanks for that. It is a superb place if you can get the right weather. It's the easiest alpine walking I've experienced, but would be tough if not pointless in West Coast clag. The tarn we camped at was a smaller one a bit to the north of Lk Tyndall.

Here are some more photos from Easter this year. Lake Myrtle is another favourite, easy-to-get-to spot,

cheers

Ditto - a little earlier. We'd camped near here a year before, but needed shelter from the spray off the wind-blown surf!

All great shots, here are a couple of mine, taken early July at Cradle Mountain.
