Hey all

So I have been looking on the forum and haven't come accross any pictures of your setups. I am new to the bush walking idea and am keen to see how you all setup at the end of the day. I am yet to purchase hiking tents and cookware and so forth and to have a look at some of your setups would be helpful.

There are so many awesome photos of what you see along your walks, now let's see some pictures of your campsite.

Cheers

Im terrible at taking photos on the trail. My current hammock set up also has attracted rain when set up so I've only got a snap of the tarp

Here's one of my tents

Hey there,

Do you mind me asking where you were in the second photo? It looks amazing! I love the fact you can just setup anywhere you like. This is the kind of hiking I would one day like to do.

Cheers in advance

When you went through Neglect Montain, did you use some type of trail map or a gps unit to get you around? Or is it easy enough to navigate?

Cheers,

As you all can see, I'm very new to this and am still finding my feet. And am unsure how you are all able to find your way around these mountains, knowing where you can camp and walk. Very cool indeed and can't wait for my first adventure.

Thanks for all the pics boys and girls...

Frenchy was at Leonards Tarn, his tent would have been down near the tarn you can see in my pic from the same spot. You will see another pic or 2 from Leonards in the link I posted.

This one is from a bit further along the range.

This is my standard setup for most trips. Integral Designs Silshelter tarp pitched with trekking pole, plus Tyvek groudsheet. Mosquito net added when needed. I've found this to be a great lightweight system that can handle a bit of weather. In the snow I use an Exped Sirius II Extreme but am seeking something lighter.

And this was the coldest camp spot I had in my old WE Second Arrow

Cheers Zane!

Yeah waking up to that view was definitely worth the cold night. Here's a few more... just an old point & shoot so didn't quite do them justice.

Cheers Nick! That was 5 years ago now on a clear and very cold July night. The original plan had been Ossa summit...maybe another time.

I've had a look through your flickr stream. Some beautiful images there. I envy you guys who live in Tas. I only get to head down there every couple of years or so. It really is a spectacular place.

...on that same mountaineering trip, after just 1 hour into a snow storm....it was a long two days! I must say, the ten withstood everything. I gave up, and let it bury. After the storm, I dug out through to the entrance... it hadn't collapsed one bit.

Camping at Solomon's Jewels (WoJ) in the snow. Note the home-made snow shoes on the far left.

Tent = Macpac Minaret (kept 2 people comfortable, warm enough and dry on snow).

Some great pics here. Would be even better if photos were accompanied by descriptions of the gear, as some already are.

My tents are old. They they have stood the test of time and payed for themselves many times over. I've an 'A', a dome (genuinely used only once), a tunnel and a hiker fly. I look at tents like the hulls of boats ... every boat leaks a bit without timely maintenance.

My favourite tent is a lighter version of the heavier car camping tents by Eureka from the Timber Loft series. It is a Timber Loft 2. It weighs 2.5kg, with alloy stakes. I like it because it is roomy. It has big entrances at both ends, a reasonably sized vestibule, big insect screens but what makes this 3 season tent good, is the internal height. I wouldn't hesitate to buy this tent again, now that it comes in green. The tent is now called the Eureka Timberline SQ 2XT and is 2.8kg, with steel stakes .... http://store.eurekatent.com/timberline-sq-2xt-tent. Nowadays the tent is less than half the price that it cost me, 25 years ago.

Image

Image

I also have an equivalent snow tent to the early Macpac Olympus. I say equivalent because Fairydown who made the original Trilogy merged with Macpac. The Trilogy weighs about 3.2 kg. It has been a good winter tent but it is cramped inside. It has good floor space, it will sleep 3 at a pinch but it has very little headroom even when sitting. I can't kneel in the tent or sit in half of the tent without hunching over. Above the tree line the tent is amazing in extreme winds. It is rated to some unbelievable wind speed. The new Macpac Olympus, has more headroom in the centre of the tent but reduced the headroom near the door so it defeats the purpose.

Image

One of the reasons why this tent has lasted so well and it is nearly 30 years old, is that I don't stress it tightly unless the conditions need it and to protect it from the UV, if I leave it set up, I'll throw a $50 hiker fly over it.

Image

In the 16 years during the drought, prior to the past 2 1/2 years of amazing rainfall, I used to go everywhere with a hiker fly, except during winter in the Alps. If it rained, which was once in a blue moon, I'd just lower the fly until the rain stopped coming under it.

Image

Over the past few years the hiker fly has been promoted to being a much needed rain awning.

Image

... and as a moon shade. I took this shot last year at midnight during the April Super Moon.

Image

These shots were taken on the Hume and Hovell and the Bicentennial National TraIl. The 3rd image is from the Main Range of Kosci'.

Warren,

I like the shot of the fly set up beside the river. Where is that? I didn't recognise it at all?

Lots of great camp sites everyone, although all those snow covered scenes are making my heart ache....no more pleeease.
Come to think about it, rivers, lakes, valleys & forested nooks.....they're all giving me very itchy feet.
