On my walk today I paused by a eucalypt to admire the foggy view and noticed an unusual insect on the bark of the tree being attacked by an ant.

I have to say that I have no idea what this insect is, when I first saw it I wondered why the heck the ant was trying to remove some bark from the tree!

Eventually, the insect managed to dispense with the ant, which fell off by either some trickery or accident:

Fascinating. Anyone know what the critter is called? It's camouflage is excellent.

It would appear that this critter is a Leafhopper: Cicadellidae: Ledrinae

Found some more images of them on Flickr
