There was good colour on the Tarn Shelf today (24th), but weather wise it really was a case of "you should have been here yesterday!"

Still a lot of Fagus that hasn't turned, but enough has to give it that wonderful golden glow. Remains to be seen how much survives the snow that is on the way.

I have found that the patch by Robert Tarn in your first picture has always been blown away first in my 5 April visits to the Shelf. It look to have not completely turned so it may well survive the current weather and still be there next week-end.

I first visited Tarn Shelf in April 2003. I was lucky enough to meet up with one of the Park Rangers on the day who directed me to the best spots for photographs. The fagus was perfect and I have not been there again when it has been as good despite 4 visits. I had a very ordinary 1.3 megapixel digital but it took good enough pictures.

The Park Ranger had a 70mm slide camera. I was lucky enough to get a private viewing of the slides he took on the day along with a selection of Mt Anne and Lake Rhona. They were superb.
