Winter trip to Lake Rhona

I had such a beautiful weekend, I thought it would be cruel not to post some photos. I went as part of the University Walking Club, and we carried a 'Poo Tube' to test whether people would be open to the idea. Unfortunately (or fortunately), no one had to use it, but the whole group said they would have if they needed to, which was good to hear.

We had a fantastic trip, despite it being absolutely freezing. The cold was well worth it!

It certainly would have been cruel not to share - what a superb weekend, and beautifully portrayed.

Maybe the temperature was a little inhibiting? Do let us know if it's used next trip - maybe it's easier to say "I would have than to actually do so?

I might have told them it was knee deep ..... It was knee deep in the middle, but that is an icy cold river. The guy in the white actually fell in at one point.

So how cold did it get overnight?

Not exactly sure of how cold it got, but it would have been in the vicinity of -8 to -10 degrees. The temperature at 9am on Sunday in Maydena was -5.7, so imagine what it was 600m higher!

-8.9 at Liawenee on Sunday morning, a tad higher than Rhona but I'd guess warmer if anything.

wow. Most of our group slept reasonably well. I only had a -4 sleeping bag and was pretty warm, except my feet were a little cold early in the morning.

I think the novelty of being in such cold temperatures kept us all in good spirits. Defrosting our boots in the morning was great fun. It was a weird sensation to step into a boot that was just filled with hot water, then having all the cold seep through with each step.

About defrosting...I remember a friend from back home (Sweden) used some kind of bag (plastic? rubber?) that she filled with hot water and then into the boot for a while. Kept the feet dry. I know she used to do this in around -30C so should be ok in -8C. I never seen it so not sure exactly what kind of bag it was. Would a freezer bag (or similar) be able to take the temp? Just an idea someone might like to try.

Liawenee got down to -11.2° on Friday night / Saturday morning, and didn't get above 5° all weekend. (Then -9.4° and -8.4° on Sat/Sun nights..

Great pics there mate, never seen the lake like that before. Anyone go up to the ridge for a look west?

Unfortunately we didn't have enough time to safely head up to the ridge. We contemplated climbing Reeds from the steep side on the way in, but when we discovered the amount of ice at the lake we thought better of it.

I'm glad you have thawed out. I'll find something worse for you next winter

I'm sure I'd rather be patient than freeze my backside off. There was good reason why I wanted to be first to the log!

Oh wow I just found this... and worked out why the people in the photos look familiar!
I think I did Space Place and Nature with a few of them. The Uni Walking Club eh? I might have to check it out
