Lost Falls, Meetus Falls

If you are travelling on the Lake Leake highway between Campbell town and the East Coast, you'll come to a spot in the road clearly marked as the highest point on this road. There are cross roads here. Turn south for a short drive down to Lost Falls (just over 5km). The way is signposted, and obviously the way most traffic has travelled of late. Its only a few minutes walk down to the falls. You walk to the top of the falls. Unfortunately the falls are hard to see, tucked away at the top of deep ravine.

There wasn't a lot of water in the river, but the cascades above the falls would make a nice photo with a bit of rain, and are easily reached by the track from the carpark.

Anyway, the other side of the river valley looked survivable, so I when for a walk.

The fall itself is a reasonable drop. There appears be a small cascade near the top and then a fall over a rock into a pond (1st pic), then another long fall over rocks that slope steeply down into the deep ravine (2nd pic). At the bottom there is another fall into the river bed (3rd pic - nearly). If you count all this as part of one waterfall, it is a very tall fall. Little or none of this can be seen from the lookout. It's a long trip to the other side of the valley, and hard to get a good photo. I'm not happy with the results, so I'll have to try again sometime.

At the same spot on the highway you can turn left (north) and head into Meetus falls. Its over 12km to the carpark. Again, clearly signposted. The walk down to the falls lookout is easy to follow and there is a good view of the falls from the lookout. The walk down to the river and the base of the falls is much harder. The track is steep in spots and could be very slippery after rain. You actually arrive at the river downstream from the falls. There is a deep water, steep sided, narrow passage through the rock in the river band just below the falls. Getting past this requires some perilous climbing (or a swim). Reaching the base of the falls is quite difficult.

If you bag your falls by sitting on top, then I approached this one from a disused forestry spur west of the river and climbed into the river valley from the south near the bend just above the falls. Its a short distance to the river but a steep decent through closed bush.

I often take the family to Meetus falls for a bbq as it is fairly well serviced and the fallss are fantastic after rainn. Sorry about the quality of the photo.
